Bushwick Bill Posted February 7, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2008 What was the Interborough Rapid Transit company thinking when they designed and built their IRT system? What made them build it to them small sizes and dimensions? They obviously choose to build on the busiest routes. Even today these routes are still the busiest. Too bad they weren't thinking big. Pelham Bay Dave Posted February 7, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2008 Remember when they tought about building the IRT it was the years between 1900-1904. They just wanted to build a subway that could be faster then the snal pace above ground.
Eastman346 Posted February 7, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 7, 2008 if I was building in the early 1900's I would have probably built small also. at least they didn't go too small.
Pablo M 201 Posted February 7, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2008 It was busy before, but probably not as busy as it is today. Remember, there are a whole lot more people in NY than ever before.
