NX Express Posted March 29, 2010 Share #26 Posted March 29, 2010 IND was made for practicality of operation, and I like it for that (i.e. tons of switches, huge mezzanines, and smoother curves. However, except QBL, it did not expand to any new areas. However, the BMT is more scenic and thus good as well. IRT was selfish (designing trains to be incompatible with railroads), is small (car sizes) and underserves Brooklyn:tdown::tdown:

INDman Posted March 29, 2010 Share #29 Posted March 29, 2010 Oops, forgot about that one. The whole idea of the IND was to build it as direct competition to the IRT and BMT and force them to go under. The IND learned from the mistakes of the two older systems, thats why it was built to be fast and extremely flexible.

INDman Posted March 29, 2010 Share #31 Posted March 29, 2010 Then why was QBL built? The IND had the whole 2nd system plan which never was even close to completed. QBL was going to be a big part of it.
NX Express Posted March 29, 2010 Share #32 Posted March 29, 2010 So the 1st system was made to kill the BMT/IRT and the 2nd was to actually expand?
INDman Posted March 29, 2010 Share #33 Posted March 29, 2010 So the 1st system was made to kill the BMT/IRT and the 2nd was to actually expand? Sort of, I don't think all of the first system was even built. The only reason that parts of the second system were built was because they were built into Plan 1 stations or tunnels. EE Broadway Local Posted April 2, 2010 Share #34 Posted April 2, 2010 The IRT dominates The Bronx and the BMT dominates Brooklyn.
NX Express Posted April 2, 2010 Share #35 Posted April 2, 2010 the BMT dominates Brooklyn. That's because it's Brooklyn Manhattan Transit!

INDman Posted April 2, 2010 Share #39 Posted April 2, 2010 IND without a doubt. There was a reason for having the colored tile band and using the same color allover a station. http://nycsubway.org/articles/indcolor.html
