1 Train South of Chambers Summer Outage Concern

That would work if the TPH was low, but alas, it is very high...

But it happened nearly every weekend in 2008 and for a good portion of 2009, and it's going to happen again in 2010. Keep in mind we're only talking about this as a weekend service change, not during rush hours or anything.

Kris is correct. When they did the preliminary underpinning work back in 08 and 09, that's what happened.

I'm sorry- I completely misread you guys post. Yes, as a weekend plan such is entirely possible and has been done. I will still say that Chambers would be hard as a terminal, as you have to switch the 2/3 to the express to the north of the Chambers St station. Turning the 1 on the express tracks would be hard considering the 2/3 combined headway, so you'd want to use the SB Local track as a terminal, which still leaves much room for jamming the line up, although would be far from impossible to run smoothly. There is little value to doing such as the combined 2/3 is fine for the line south of 14th.

14th Street is much more feasible. If you have to terminate the (1) at Chambers, you would have to send them either on the express tracks (which is not happening) or down Greenwich Street to some point for a crossover, but that is not happening because that section of track is closed because of the underpinning work.

Its possible. See http://images.nycsubway.org/trackmap/bigdowntown.png

You could send the (1) in on the southbound local track, and have all of the passengers alight and board at that track. Then the (1) could switch to the southbound express track (of course when there are no oncoming trains at the switch) and then continue on the northbound express track.

Actually, this would solve the problem of no express service on the 7th Avenue Line when this happens (in the past, the (1)(2)(3) were all local and the (1) just terminated at 14th Street). Now the (2)(3) could run local south of 96th Street (as they always do when this happens) and the (1) could run express Chambers Street - 96th Street.

Of course, the (1) could've run express from 96th Street - 14th Street during these GO's for all of these years.

As you can tell from the map, the (2)(3) HAVE to be on the express tracks if they have to continue onto Brooklyn. Which means, if the (1) must terminate at Chambers Street, it would have to cross onto the express tracks in order to continue back up. And what it does is, it could affect trains on the (2)(3) because the tracks must clear in order for those trains to switch in. It may as well translate into delays for the (2)(3) trains, and would make things much more complicated.

If you terminate the (1) at 14th Street (while having it on the express between there and 34th), you basically avoid as many delays as possible.

By doing that, the (2)/(3) and (1) would have to cross in front of each other north of 96th Street, delaying service. Yes, even on weekends. Is having 7th Avenue express service during weekend G.O.'s worth those kinds of delays?
