LIRR Headlights

Aside from the head lights, the M7 cars have two lights affixed slightly on top of the storm door on each cab. These lights were installed on the older models (M1's etc..) a few years back. Why? Any paticular reason?

Yep, I think they act as ditch lights which are required by the FRA. I think that they are slightly aimed out to the side, but not by much.
