Sunnyside Yard

NJ transit? What are they doing there?

NJ Transit and Amtrak both use Sunnyside Yard, the yard is owned by Amtrak. LIRR trains pass by on the mainline, but they store trains in the West Side Yard in Manhattan.

Cool pics! BTW, I remember seeing an old train car at the yard a few weeks ago. Kinda like from the 40s or 50s. It was either red or blue.

It was a private car. Basically someone who owns a railroad car can have it tied onto an Amtrak train, it's usually at the rear of the consist.

Thats pretty strange. One would think NJ Transit would store cars at West Side Yard and LIRR at Sunnyside. Is it because NJ Transit like Amtrak uses Catenary while LIRR use 3rd rail?

I'm pretty sure NJT trains go to Sunnyside to help prevent delays,

and keep traffic flowing smoother.

They would have to change the switches to go to West Side Yard

and that would slow down inbound Amtrak and NJT traffic.

NJT trains going back to NJ are directed to tracks 1-4 because Sunnyside

doesn't connect with those tracks.
