Sea Beach Posted April 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2010 The aging train cars of the Staten Island Railway fleet will be sticking around longer than expected, as a promised order of brand-new trains has been dropped from the MTA's five-year capital program. Though the new rail cars won't be coming, the plan, approved earlier this week, does include a bit of good news: The new $23.3 million Arthur Kill station is still on the list, albeit not until 2012. Only the first two years of the plan are funded so far, as the MTA struggles to rein in its deficit. The Railway's cars, which entered service in 1973, have a lifespan of about 40 years. "The rolling stock of the [Railway] might find itself more suited for an antique railroad museum in the Midwest, rather than a modern commuter railway in a city of over 500,000 people," City Councilmen Vincent Ignizio and Jim Oddo wrote in a letter to MTA Chairman Jay Walder. KNIGHTRIDER3:16 Posted April 30, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 30, 2010 This is great news. Good for SIRR. I'm glad to hear they will still have the goods although M3's would of been nice but 44's is fine by me .

Forest Glen Posted April 30, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 30, 2010 This sucks, but it's not like the R44's on SI were falling apart. They were recently renovated. And this is the SIR, not the train. Ridership isn't that high.
w8Hou Posted April 30, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 30, 2010 ^^^ Actually ridership is high, SRO in the day because of crappy fequency. M3 is not compatible with SIR. I mean, how many doors on each side does M3 have? M3 needs modification on the truck in order to run on the line. Plus you have to build brand new substation for M3 to accommodate. M3 has two doors each side. Besides, the R44SI is fine with the recent overhaul, they are probably gonna last 5 to 7 years if maintain good order. There is plenty of time to plan and fund a new train car order of SIR for replacements.

Ridership isn't that high. I guess you haven't rode the Staten Island Railway to know about ridership statistics. w8Hou is right. I've rode the SIR once when I had school off on a Thursday during the P.M. rush back in 2007. The train was so packed that there was no way in hell I wasn't getting a seat. In addition, I got on at Tompkinsville. TBH, SIR doesn't need any new cars at the moment. In the next year or two, yes.

LRG Posted May 1, 2010 Share #11 Posted May 1, 2010 Well, for once I agree with both of you. Couple of weekends during 2006 & 2008, the SIR is also pretty packed , I didn't get a seat few times until somewhere between Grasmere and and Grant City. Surely those 4 car R-44's are pretty packed. M3's might fit but it does need several overhauls and the SIR also need several overhauls. The newly overhauled R-44 I agree, will last another 5-10 years if properly and diligently maintained. During rush hours, there will be consists of five cars.
Forest Glen Posted May 1, 2010 Share #12 Posted May 1, 2010 On my SI express bus trips, I usually take the SIR back to the ferry. It is moderately crowded. There may be 3-5 standees in a car but it's not like the or .

metsfan Posted May 1, 2010 Share #18 Posted May 1, 2010 This line may end up getting modified PA5 cars, vs modified subway cars due to the FRA standards. I highly doubt it will get any new tech non FRA rolling stock, it just makes no sense, they are not crash rated for the national rail network, only reason the R44's are even there is because MTA couldn't afford anything else. Don't be shocked if you end up seeing modified PA5 cars being ordered, they are 100% compatible with the SIR. - A
w8Hou Posted May 1, 2010 Share #19 Posted May 1, 2010 ^^^ SIR is not FRA anymore. The SIR is just operating as a rapid transit, a stepchild to a subway system running a patheic fequency.

w8Hou Posted May 1, 2010 Share #22 Posted May 1, 2010 Sources? There was a SubChat discussion about SIR status reveals for decades SIR is no longer FRA oversee. With this link to prove to ALL OF THE GUYS that are doubting this: http://transit-safety.fta.dot.gov/publications/safety/NYMTA_Safety_Investigation/HTML/dot-vntsc-fta-93-4.htm Substance Abuse While under no requirement to perform drug and alcohol testing since leaving the regulatory control of the FRA in 1988, SIRTOA has continued to doso from SubChat discussion: According to the Assistant Super that escorted us on the shop tour, SIRT is not bound by FRA rules, although they are using the FRA guidelines for operations & maintainence. http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=925270 The whole discussion in the link: http://www.subchat.com/read.asp?Id=925112 Even All the R44 SIRs no longer have grab irons or steps. What type of truck modification would the M3 need. If someone can correct me, the shoe is not compatible to run on SIR third rail Plus the volts, SIR runs 600, LIRR M3 runs 750. You have to modified eletrical systems, plus build new substation for M3s. Also spend more maintenance in the interior were SIR riders can be crazy to rip up the leather seats and destroy luggage compartment and so-on. Is it worth to bring M3s and spend all that kind of money?
