Queens Surface Posted May 8, 2010 Share #27 Posted May 8, 2010 The word idea is said like idear...And the word saw is said like sawr... The rest is hard to explain. I still remember the good ol' days in 8th grade when I had plenty of teachers with a New York accent. I only heard teachers say idear.
Zman Posted May 8, 2010 Share #28 Posted May 8, 2010 In general, New Yawkis...oh, I'm sorry, New Yorkers, put an 'aw' sound on their r's. Bostonians put an 'ah'. And yes, I speak with a true New York accent. You're not born with it, you pick it up from others around you for a period of years. Funny thing is that when I speak French, I totally lose the accent. Things that make you go hmmmmm.

B35 via Church Posted May 8, 2010 Share #31 Posted May 8, 2010 Thanks to EE's post... I thought of someone who pronounces words just like that..... Mike Francesa. so, MTR Admiralty... if you have the YES Network, listen to the Mike Francesa show; it airs b/w 1pm & 6:30pm.... (you can also listen to WFAN radio station b/w those same times, also) that guy has a NY accent if I ever heard one.... MTR Admiralty Posted May 8, 2010 Author Share #43 Posted May 8, 2010 Lol @ "Yuman". I don't say that. Yup, yewman. There are other examples as well. I used to remember my middle school English teacher saying the word "poiple". I knew she meant purple, but I had no idea that it was the NY accent. EE Broadway Local Posted May 8, 2010 Share #44 Posted May 8, 2010 I only heard teachers say idear. I say idear (idea) and ova (over), inna (inner), soba (sober), yewman (human). In addition to poiple (purple), there's * coib (curb) * boid (bird) * goil (girl) * toid (third) * toidy (thirty) * erl (oil) * tree (three) * peepul (people) * cherce (choice)
