The New York accent

MTR Admiralty

Recommended Posts

In general, New Yawkis...oh, I'm sorry, New Yorkers, put an 'aw' sound on their r's. Bostonians put an 'ah'.

And yes, I speak with a true New York accent. You're not born with it, you pick it up from others around you for a period of years.

Funny thing is that when I speak French, I totally lose the accent. Things that make you go hmmmmm.:confused:

Thanks to EE's post... I thought of someone who pronounces words just like that.....

Mike Francesa.

so, MTR Admiralty... if you have the YES Network, listen to the Mike Francesa show; it airs b/w 1pm & 6:30pm....

(you can also listen to WFAN radio station b/w those same times, also)

that guy has a NY accent if I ever heard one....

Rudy Giuliani also has a NY accent

I totally agree. I picked up some parts of the accent myself. I dropped the h's in words such as "human".

Heh. I guess the New York rendition of that famous Bostonian phrase would sound like:

Pawk da caw in Hawvawd Yawd.

I only heard teachers say idear.

I say idear (idea) and ova (over), inna (inner), soba (sober), yewman (human).

In addition to poiple (purple), there's

* coib (curb)

* boid (bird)

* goil (girl)

* toid (third)

* toidy (thirty)

* erl (oil)

* tree (three)

* peepul (people)

* cherce (choice)
