RTOMan Posted February 28, 2008 Share #26 Posted February 28, 2008 Uh, no I didn't. I know some are made Kawasaki and some are made by Bombardier. Both of these foreign builders suck. Sometiems it helps to "clarify" things... Just pulling your coat young blood.

East New York Posted March 6, 2008 Share #29 Posted March 6, 2008 I have never seen an R142 on the before. LOL... How do you tell the difference???
Pelham Bay Dave Posted March 6, 2008 Share #30 Posted March 6, 2008 Its rare but sometimes R 142's do run on the Line like when they run split service between Pelham Bay to 125 and 125 to Brooklyn Bridge. The 125 to Brooklyn Bridge borrows trains from the Line. The Diffrance between a R 142 and R 142A off that bat is the Motor noise. The R 142/143 you hear the EEEE Sound and the R 142 and R 160 have the wine sound.
SubwayGuy Posted March 6, 2008 Share #31 Posted March 6, 2008 LOL... How do you tell the difference??? The main difference is the builders of the cars (R142 Bombardier, R142A Kawasaki) and the propulsions. If you're riding in one and unsure of the difference, the R142 is the car whose propulsion sounds more like a whistle/screech (sounds similar to a R160A), while the R142A is the car whose propulsion is the more melodic tone (sounds similar to a R143). Exteriors: From across the platform that the motor trucks on the two car types are different (in short, the R142 features a visible "bar with arches" design while the R142A motor truck is more subtle). Here are links to pics (not taken by me): R142 motor truck: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?17997 R142A motor truck: http://www.subwaynut.com/irt/167n4/167n417.jpg that's the most notable exterior difference. but you can also see in those pics the R142 cab end is two pieces, while the R142A is one piece (look for the "seam" on the R142 under the LED route sign)...also the R142A has an extra latch at the top of the storm door, and the operating cab windshields are shaped slightly different than the R142... last the side destination signs on the R142 go blank between what they say ie: 4 | Lexington Ave Exp. (blank) 4 | Eastern Pkwy Exp. whereas on an R142A the sign will just go to the next phase 4 | Lexington Ave Exp. 4 | Eastern Pkwy Exp. Interiors: R142 speakers are in the center. R142A they're on the sides of the ceiling. The cars have different HVAC units (the R142's is much louder, you'll hear it clearly from inside the car when the blower is on)...the R142A also has an extra advertising panel on each side of the car, and last but simplest the builder plates are different (R142 Bombardier, R142A Kawasaki). hope all that helps you out
