Beat a free PATH to N.J. Monday

Good news, New Jersey.

The PATH train will be free Monday to honor the 100th anniversary of the mass transit system, Port Authority officials announced.

From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., all rides on the PATH will be free. Vouchers for free SmartLink cards - which can continuously be replenished - will be available at the 13 PATH stations.

Each weekday, some 227,000 riders use the system, which opened in February 1908, to travel between New York and New Jersey.

During the next decade, the Port Authority will pour $3.3 billion into the PATH system, increasing capacity by 25%, officials said.
