MTR Admiralty Posted June 18, 2010 Author Share #52 Posted June 18, 2010 German loss to the Serbians was pretty shocking to watch, considering they were rated so high right after their victory against Australia. The Americans should make the "Quaterfinals' aka the Elite 8 (phrase from the college basketball tournement here in the US)as i just read the bookmakers in both London and Vegas has them as 'favorites' to beat Ghana. Off topic for second but related. The 1 thing i dislike about the world cup besides shootouts(aka penalty kicks) in the knockout after just '1' overtime period, is the use of goal scored to determine 'ties' in the 1st round. For instance why could not South Africa and mexico play a sudden death extra game to determine the 2nd place winner in their group? I can understand goal difference for 2 teams that are both advancing such as the US and England though.

PKs are counted in towards the score, shootouts aren't. Shootouts are usually done when there is a tie and no goals are scored by either team during extra time or that it remains a draw. Basically, one goal is used and a keeper is positioned by the goal. The attacker kicks from the penalty mark. And the keeper is the only one defending it. All other players remain in the centre. Besides being shot from the penalty mark (the 12 yards), it's not really a penalty kick. But yes, it's pretty lame, but I can't think of a better alternative to end a crucial game. You can't play extra games in this kind of event. It was all planned. 5 matches per group - so 40 matches. And that's all in a short time frame. FIFA is given one month for this. And if one group does it, other groups would want it. FIFA can't accomodate all of these extra games. Maintenace and everything. Cost. That's the thing. And plus, this is the first round, which really is the appetizer. People want this thing to get played and be done and over with. They want to know who is going to play in the final match. If a team loses because the number of goals is less than that of another country's, boo-hoo. It sucks. Do better in 4 years.

I am sure the folks at Disney are crying this morning:cry: LOL because the US is out of the tournment. This World Cup has been on ESPN/ABC their highest TV ratings in US since the 1994 Tournment was held in America. Also gone from the world cup is England that was blown out 4-1 w/ injured and helpless David Beckham looking on the bench. This could have been Mr. Beckham's last world cup apperence as he is rumored to be thinking retiring and maybe start an acting career in Hollywood. As a US fan myself, the only match i will match in full will be the Championship game and also watch bits and pieces of other games in the knockout round but i have busy week as I am going to Boston Saturday and Monday for July 4th Family Holiday BBQ w/ my brother in South NJ. Off topic for second. Why is ESPN/ABC using that in game-announcer from Britian who is the Play-Play man for the British Priermer League from Fox-TV British sister station Sky Sports? Are not there someone in US who can do play-play?
