Cait Sith Posted June 26, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 26, 2010 Even if that was a DSLR, I dont really see a difference in your pictures. Lens is dirty and you just got that camera, quality is somewhat ok, there's a little bit of an improvement but you really shouldnt have gotten a DSLR.... Better work on your pics, its good for a start.

Better work on your pics, its good for a start. I can agree with this. One thing I noticed was usage of the spot meter. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you most likely don't know the best way to use a spot meter. Stick to the matrix meter. It's pretty damn good. LRG Posted June 26, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 26, 2010 Your shots have improved, that's one thing I must say. However you have a lot to learn about manual mode before you dare use it so stick to auto and on your free time experiment so next time around, we won't have to be bombarded with blurry, over/underexposed, or oblique-angled shots, or even videos for the matter. You're getting there though....

Y2Julio Posted June 26, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 26, 2010 You don't even know what you're doing in manual mode to be saying "Auto isn't that good and I like the shots on my DSLR." Stop trying so hard to act like know your DSLR, it's ok to shoot in auto. When I used my DSLR for the first time, it was on a railfan trip with some guys from here and I used it on auto without any issues. Slowly I started learning more about what this or that did before going full fledged manual. These shots were taken with my D40 which a few MP less than your D40x, on auto on my very first day with it yet they look better than yours. Explain to me then, how does auto suck? mark1447 Posted June 27, 2010 Share #13 Posted June 27, 2010 Auto isn't that good and I like the shots on my DSLR. Thanks Joe for the advice You dont like using Auto because everyone else uses Manual mode. The shots have imporved but a LOT more work is needed. Some of these are dark, dirty and out of line. If you serieously need to use Manual mode then stick with auto for some shots and play with manual mode to get perfect shots. I took THIS in Manual mode: Not like the pros but still good. AND taken with a P&S NOT DSLR! You need to make more improvements before using Manual dude. Changing Cameras from P&S > ZLR > DSLR or what ever doesn't make difference, its what you do to make it better!
LRG Posted June 27, 2010 Share #14 Posted June 27, 2010 Auto isn't that good and I like the shots on my DSLR. No offense dude but what you just said was really ignorant. It seems like you don't want to improve your photos at all. Shit I should be the one taking photos with your DSLR camera and show you how to really use the damn thing...stop wasting your (grand)parents' money already toggling back and forth with camera brands and just stick with one already. You got a Sony H20 a month ago and now you have a DSLR, neither of which you don't know how to use. S to the M to the H....

553 Bridgeton Posted June 27, 2010 Share #16 Posted June 27, 2010 Manual... Auto... What you need to do is stick Auto untill you learn what a SLR can actually do when you know what your doing.

R32 3348 Posted June 27, 2010 Share #18 Posted June 27, 2010 Nice shots. There is quality improvement, but you are taking tilted pictures again and a lot of the underground ones are dark. Make sure you keep the camera straight, and adjust the shutter speed and F-stop to make sure your pictures don't come out dark. If you don't know what those are, look them up online so you know how to adjust them. BTW, it's OK to use Auto mode on the SLR. I know a lot of people have been pressuring you to learn your camera's manual settings but since you just got it I would stick to Auto mode, and then try out Manual settings when you start getting used to it. TrainFanatic Posted June 27, 2010 Share #19 Posted June 27, 2010 Like some have said, you're shots have improved. Simply take time to experiment with aperature, shutter speed, ISO and other controlls. Here's an article to help you learn more about these contolls: http://www.goldfries.com/photography/digital-slr-beginner-understanding-shutter-speed-aperture-and-iso/
Joe Posted June 27, 2010 Share #20 Posted June 27, 2010 Just stick to automatic matrix metering. The D40x has an excellent meter in it, it will serve you well 99% of the time. To effectively use the spot meter, you need to understand the zone system, which, I won't go into here.

Well I'm getting so annoyed with all the complaining and really upset. The only people who I feel comfortable giving me tips is Trevor, Kris, Train Fanatic, Joe, Fred G, Zach, Pablo, NYTransit and Joe No one is trying to be your dad dude. You keep asking people for suggestions, camera upgrades and a bunch of other useless things and you DON'T take it. Go ahead and keep investing for more cameras, trust me the camera is gonna sit there and do nothing but wait for you to put your part. If you want magic go with Auto like Julio says. No auto, you ain't going no where. When i first started using my cam back in 2008, it was hard for me to keep it straight, keep it right and all, so I kept using Auto for about a month and yes Auto is a good place for starters. Soon after many people started saying use Manual, I tried as much as I can while maintaing a balance with Manual and Auto. After about 2-3 months, no more Auto, now I use Manual like a Pro. ON A P&S, I don't need a DSLR right now to make the best PROFESSIONAL shots. One day I will go with the pros but for now I'm perfect with my P&S, next step is ZLR more advanced for me! Then DSLR! If you wanna become a pro, you can take suggestions, but you have to put your part in it. No one or your cam is gonna do it for you.. From the looks of your photos its in the middle, more or like the same as your passed photos but too dark and dirty..
