Luis1985 Posted June 27, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2010 The amount of time the M5 Local and M5 Limited takes from Washington Heights-George Washington Bridge heading Downtown to Greenwich Village-Houston St: It's going to be so much worse starting Monday. NX Express Posted June 27, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 27, 2010 What's the point of an LTD that saves 5 minutes?
S78 via Hylan Posted June 27, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2010 What's the point of an LTD that saves 5 minutes? It's not a lot, but that could be the difference between someone missing and making the Staten Island Ferry, since the new M5 serves the ferry now. Gotham Bus Co Posted June 27, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 27, 2010 It's going to be so much worse starting Monday. Agreed. I still would have shortened the M5 to CCNY and sent the M104 further north... M5: - Northbound via Riverside, 135th, to Amsterdam. - Southbound via Amsterdam, 133rd, Broadway, 135th , Riverside. M104 (renumbered?): - Northbound via Broadway to G.W. Bridge. - Southbound from G.W. Bridge via Broadway.
FamousNYLover Posted June 27, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 27, 2010 My B/O friend's going to drive that M5. I think longest trip will be when December Season comes up, with no turns of switching lane, could force M5 to be over 2-hours.
NovaBus 5121 Posted June 27, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 27, 2010 The longest run I saw on the current M5 is at 1:30 s/b from GWB. It arrives at South Ferry at 3:27 for a run time of 117 minutes (1 hour 57 minutes). Clearly a few runs, regardless of the run time will be longer 2 hours everyday due to crowding, traffic and other conditions.
MTR Admiralty Posted June 27, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 27, 2010 They should have sent the M1 to SF instead and turn the M5 in the village like it used to.
LRG Posted June 27, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 27, 2010 They should have sent the M1 to SF instead and turn the M5 in the village like it used to. I heard that some buses will still short turn at Houston Street.

No kidding. B) This new Merged M5/6 combo will be put to the test almost right away, as Thursday and Friday traffic will be like a parking alot as New Yorkers gets out of town for the July 4th Holiday weekend. And also tourists visiting town as now. So roads anywhere near the M5 especially the GW Bridge could be a nightmare and buses running 30 minute late or more then bunching together w/ 5-6 buses at once.
Gotham Bus Co Posted June 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 27, 2010 I heard that some buses will still short turn at Houston Street. The new M5 public timetable (http://www.mta.info/nyct/bus/schedule/manh/m005nxt.pdf) shows everything running to SF, although some dispatchers might have to short some trips. Queens Surface Posted June 27, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 27, 2010 As a busfan i don't think i could ride the M5 end to end. I just can't spend over 1.5 hours in a NYCT bus with hard seats.

FamousNYLover Posted June 28, 2010 Share #14 Posted June 28, 2010 I think I could because I rode Bee-Line W15 from end to end which took 4-hours roundtrip only by sitting.

Luis1985 Posted June 28, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted June 28, 2010 u wanna know something funny about the M5? its not even a route that operates 24/7. also, the M1, M3, M4 and M5 service doesnt run late nights, meaning no buses will run via 5th Ave between 125 St and 8 St. The M2 is the only route that is gonna run all night, and maybe crosstown buses like the M79, M86, and M96 will serve some areas on 5th Ave.

A slight correction Luis1985 there will be no bus service on 5th/Madison at all Overnights between 135th Street and 110. Then you still have M2 5th/Madison service running every Hour(60 Minutes headways)between 110/Central Pk. North and 8th St. Before the cuts, 5th/Madison bus riders between 110 and 8th St could wait no more than every 30 minutes for a bus either the M1 or M2. In last year's (2009)oringal Doomsday Cuts i think the M2 was also planned to end Overnight service as well. Still on cold or rainy/snowy nights I am sure the yellow cabs will do brisk business on 5th Ave and elsewhere in Manhattan.

One weekend, when subway reroutes were out of countrol, I rode the M5 from Columbia U Hosp (168th) to Saks (51st). I had to pee my brains out by the time I got to midtown. If anyone fans this route, they'll have to stop for a bathroom/food break. lol. I feel horrible for whoever has to drive this bus. Are they going to split the run in half? I Run Trains Posted June 28, 2010 Share #20 Posted June 28, 2010 Same here. I would be surprised if anyone would actually ride along the entire line. OK I JUST RODE THE WHOLE LINE TODAY AFTER DROPPING MY GIRL OFF AT WORK AND TO TELL THE TRUTH, IT WASNT BAD. AND MAYBE THAT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC ALONG THE LINE BUT I GOT ON AT SOUTH FERRY AT 9;30 AND GO TO THE GW AT 11. THATS WITH LIGHT TRAFFIC! It makes it look online you screaming at or being mad to someone. Thank You. Also remember this week of June 28-July 2nd is simliar to the week between Christmas and New Years as schools are closed for summer vaction and many riders have the week off. As i said before the first real test of this new M5 route will be Friday Afternoon/Evening where every man, woman and child will be trying to leave the city. Thus roads like Riverside Driver/Broadway North will be bumper-bumper traffic heading to the GW Bridge, the Cross Bronx and points away from the city.

IRT Bronx Express Posted June 28, 2010 Share #23 Posted June 28, 2010 I'm sure that the M5 being the longest local/limited route isn't surprising. The M100 was the longest local route at one point from Riverdale to 125 St.

The M100 was the longest local route at one point from Riverdale to 125 St. At least for Manhattan regular routes the new M5 is probably Manhattan's longest in terms of distance. Citywide the longest regular(local bus) is still the Q60 while intraborough the longest local line is the S74.
