Shortline Bus Posted July 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2010 Guys here a different topic. Does anyone like music played in background at stores and supermarkets? I asked this question as a national dollar store chain "Dollar Tree" has decided to no longer play music in all of their stores due to high costs paying one of the companies that provides this service. I know there are a few Dollar Tree stores in Westchester, Bergen and Nassau Counties but not sure in NYC's 5 boros. Also here in Dutchess County, there are about 4 dollar tree stores within a 45 minute drive from my house. Here news link. http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2010/07/08/dollar-tree-stops-playing-music-in-its-stores-to-save-money/?icid=main|main|dl5|link5|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.walletpop.com%2Fblog%2F2010%2F07%2F08%2Fdollar-tree-stops-playing-music-in-its-stores-to-save-money%2F Also ,Target also a while ago no longer plays music at all of their US stores as well. However most of the national chain stores such as Macy's, Home Depot, JC Penny, Wal Mart, etc. and even regional stores from PathMark, Duane Reade, Shoprite, etc. still plays them. What you guys think?
MTR Admiralty Posted July 9, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 9, 2010 I'm fine with the music, but these days the younger generation is armed with iPods and mp3 players, which MAY make it redundant to have music. Also, what you think of "elevator music" played when you are on hold when calling a company?

Shortline Bus Posted July 9, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted July 9, 2010 My only big grip when calling '800' aka toll free numbers for say business w. my bank, etc. and hearing background music is the same damn songs played over and over again LOL. Foxie working as a Teacher for last few years, the only place you hear music in most schools other than parties in class (i.e Christmas/New Years or end of school year in June)as either in PE/GYM classes or in the Prinicpal's office. St Louis Car 09 Posted July 9, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 9, 2010 Background music contains subliminal messages. You go there for a six pack and the next minute your walking out with depends.

Also, what you think of "elevator music" played when you are on hold when calling a company? Excuse me. I'm 15 years old It really doesn't matter to me if they play the music or not. It does make it more pleasurable to shop there, but if they don't have the money available than so be it.
MAA89 Posted July 10, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 10, 2010 Excuse me. I'm 15 years old I don't think he was criticizing the fact that they walk around with iPods. Anyway, I usually like background music in public places, but if a store decides to remove it as a cost-cutting measure, why not? If that means lower prices, it's a sacrifice worth making. Agree bro 110% on your above statement. If it means saving couple of dollars so be it. Not to get too off topic. Anyone been to a store playing background music and it was music not meant for young kids to hear ie Hard core Rap or Heavy Metal Rock? Couple of years ago i was at a "Dr Jay's' store on 34th Street and they were playing Nas. Man not trying to be politically correct but man they were using the "N" word, through out the store with lots of kids under 17 years of age in there. While it does not bother me so much, It did concern me it was in heard of such young kids. Also heard Heavy Metal crap w/ young kids at a Shoprite here in Hudson Valley on a Saturday Night around 8pm. A shoprite worker stocking and he blasting heavy metal w/ tons of cursing and again kids w/ their parents in the store. Reactions?

Bx41 Wakefield Posted July 10, 2010 Share #12 Posted July 10, 2010 I don't even notice the music when I go in. All I hear is advertisements at these stores.
PATCOman Posted July 10, 2010 Share #13 Posted July 10, 2010 I agree with FP, I get sick of the same music I hear at work every day. Whenever I shop at Target, the silence does not bother me at all.

metsfan Posted July 10, 2010 Share #15 Posted July 10, 2010 Firstly, you can get music in stores via sat radio or via internet, internet can be free, or you can even play it from a CD or media player. Some stores have crap music, some have -ok- music. I would prefer to have "sounds of nature" like rain or waterfall or some such than music. - A
SoSpectacular Posted July 10, 2010 Share #16 Posted July 10, 2010 Working the overnight shift at the East Meadow Walmart, all I hear is the sound of the TVs repeating the intro of the DVDs they have playing :S
B35 via Church Posted July 11, 2010 Share #17 Posted July 11, 2010 in supermarkets? That never bothered me at all.... matter fact, the Met food (erm, NSA now) I go to, they play a mixture of rap music, reggaeton, and spanish music.... you can find me boppin my head to it, while tossing items in the shopping cart... it makes the shopping experience last a little less longer...... now the elevator music they play at most dentist offices, different story.... guess that's their way of keeping you calmed & soothed before they give you the dam bill.... LOL.
