Dan05979 Posted July 18, 2010 Share #28 Posted July 18, 2010 The 8400's had roof had the roof tailpipes at delivery too. IIRC 8600-8703, 8750-90XX had the Alcoas. I used to luuuuv those babies. Nah baby 8600 was the very first bus to use the 4 cylinder engine and have a tail pipe comming out the top rear, I remember it first went to the 126st depot and then went to the 100st depot and that bus was so sharp looking with those shiny alcoas and they had used different interior lights. the 84's and 85's were the the first buses to have the solid white rear with the vent on one side after the last window if you know what I mean not the "porkchop" rear window. they still used the detroit diesel 92's Then a few years later I started seeing some 8400's and 8500's with roof tailpipes and I think they changed the engines to the 4cyl deal. I remember this because I used to take the bus to school on 57st and 2cnd ave's. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong but I think i'm 100% on this. Come to think of it, I do remember seeing 8400's without roof tail pipes. Since I basicly hated that series, I never even payed it any attention! Plus I was only 10 when they came in. Looks like I need to study up on my '93 TMC's! Anybody know when they were re-powered?

And those RTSs that make the fire truck siren sound, there's a few in Flatbush and Ulmer Park that do it, they fix it eventually so they don't stay like that, 5092 did it but UP fixed it, IIRC 9653 is one of the buses that makes that sound. This is the sound I'm talking about...
