A few thoughts:

It is unfortunate NYCT is not replacing buses as fast as they should.  Too many old worn out buses being pounded more than ever due to weekend GO bustitutions.  Look at this weekend alone: buses needed for J between Marcy and B'way Jct.; M for the entire length, and 2/3 from Franklin Ave. to New Lots/Flatbush.

Let's not speculate over CP swaps right now.  They do need replacements for (supposedly--we've heard this song before) retired Orion V CNG's.  It would be logical to replace them with Orion VII CNG's........even if it's only a few.  They have enough new beese.

Grand Ave.: with the exception of the Q59 all buses pull in both for the b/o's swing (lunch) and end of shift.  Because of this there are lots of interlined runs so NYCT can keep the jobs paying as close to 8 hours as possible.  Practically speaking there would be a lot of b/o deadheading to/from the depot since all routes, except the Q59, are a good distance away and time consuming to get to via bus.  Some d/h would require 2 buses.  A given bus is on multiple routes daily.  After 1 or 2 trips on a route, they have to pull in, then back out with another b/o or same b/o going to another route.

Speaking of Grand Ave. no surprise of loaners.  Again, they have to staff weekend GO's further straining their old buses.  All buses except 40 are from the '90's---15 years old.  There will be more problems in the hot weather.  IMO their maintenance is good, but they can only do so much with all those old beese.   If any depot deserves new buses it's them, but I don't like the Nova LFs because they do not handle crowds well but I have a feeling that's what GA is going to get-------eventually.

Problem is, if the TA retires too many buses now, they'll be short when they need buses most. I may sound wrong here, but it would be better to at least have some buses than no buses even if they are old.

And plus, they usually have buses come in from Manhattan depots to help out. Last weekend on the (A) shuttle, there were artics from OS and buses from Manhattanville.

Most shuttles no matter where they are have some 126 artics, MHV comes around pretty often too.

It's not even the fact that they are retiring too many buses, they order buses in large numbers that makes up a good chunk of the fleet and one that time comes, you have a good chunk of the fleet at retirement age (case in point, the RTS). It's like a cycle if you look at it, I'm pretty sure they had this shortage problem with the fishbowls when it was time for them to retire (damn near every bus was a fishbowl back then). If you look at it, we're gonna have this problem again when the OGs retire (look at how many of those we have), and when they NGs retire (that's 850 buses at almost every depot)

They HAD this problem in the 80s with the Grumman 870... Those frames were NO good which forced them to overhaul Blitzs and whatever else they had until the RTS came in and shut the show down lol

Well the 870s were somewhat of a different story. That was more along the line of a mass retirement since they were all pulled off the road at once. Things aren't that bad now as we still have something at least in the reserve pool...even if they are old as dirt lol
