INDman Posted August 27, 2010 Share #26 Posted August 27, 2010 Trains are meant to be run by motormen, not computers. They don't make those anymore... Do CBTC trains detect any obstruction on the track? Because the way I see it, if the T/O doesn't pay attention for a couple of seconds, and the computer doesn't detect it, somebody might get run over without anyone knowing No, the computer does not detect anything except signals from the CBTC system. There is an alerter though, that the T/O must press every 20 seconds.
Guest lance25 Posted August 27, 2010 Share #27 Posted August 27, 2010 @Ftrainfan You brought this on yourself. By saying some of the shit that you have over the past few weeks, more so in the past few days, you've opened that door all on your own. Only the is using CBTC. How the hell would that affect train service on any other line. Why would it matter if the R46s were put back on the (not saying they should). They've been there for decades without problems. You are right! I kind deserved it. But you can do the honor of saying sorry for all the mean comments! 2. I though if other T/O's for other lines knew about this , they might remove auto pilot from R160s from other lines(i.e:the ) or just remove some R160s all together 3. Yeah , the was great with R46s. But all those times the ran R46s was that connector open between Broadway-Lafayette? Nope! But now it is open to the connector , so it only safe to only 60footers on the . Like R160s! YankeesPwnMets Posted August 27, 2010 Share #30 Posted August 27, 2010 Get over your obession with the . Grand Concourse Posted August 28, 2010 Share #31 Posted August 28, 2010 R46s have ran on the Willy B [to at least the Fresh Pond yard - pic of it has been posted often on subchat]. As stated by others, should an R46 end up on the bridge, it would have to relay on the bridge to return back to 6th Av. Of course the t/o that made the wrong punch could be in deep shit, there is nothing to prevent an R46 to end up on the Essex portion of the station. So far the is the only line that runs on CBTC. It is going to appear on the in a few years, once the R188s come in.

R32 3348 Posted August 28, 2010 Share #34 Posted August 28, 2010 This CBT-Shit is a waste of money. Too bad the MTA wants to throw out more money to implement this on the line.... In general, CBTC is not a waste of money. In fact, it can be a money saver since in theory it renders C/R's useless, and that is a whole bunch of payroll the wouldn't be dishing out. However, the way the is going about implementing CBTC, sometimes it really does seem like a waste of money, what with all the glitches and whatnot. Also, some lines in NYC are just not fit for OPTO. Whatever, the has only been operating under full ATO for less than a year, so it's not like it's not going to come without its fair share of problems. The real problem would be if these problems were still happening two years from now. Do CBTC trains detect any obstruction on the track? Because the way I see it, if the T/O doesn't pay attention for a couple of seconds, and the computer doesn't detect it, somebody might get run over without anyone knowing In that case, that somebody would get run over whether or not the train had CBTC anyway. So it'd be the T/O's responsibility anyway, not CBTC's. FYI , we park slopers have very soft hearts! LOL Trust us, we know...

Donald Posted August 28, 2010 Share #39 Posted August 28, 2010 Non-computerized trains can also move on their own. Many years ago when my father (a retired conductor) was on break and a train charged itself up and started moving.
SubwayGuy Posted August 28, 2010 Share #40 Posted August 28, 2010 Trains are meant to be run by motormen, not computers. f**kin A right doggy... When people f**k up, they most often sort of f**k up and realize it time to limit the damage. When computers f**k up, they almost always REALLY f**k up. And people die. CBTC does not render C/Rs useless, it does NOT open or close the doors or assist in evacuations, make unusual announcements, or respond to passengers (via emergency intercom or other wise). CBTC is a waste of money as a whole. It was meant to in cress the capacity by several trains, but has only done so by 1 train. That is a total waste. Until the system is aware of it's surroundings (can "see" people, workers, or obstructions on the roadbed) T/Os and C/Rs are needed.

And may I remind everyone that this occured too after the ridership surge when the R42s had to run in conjunction with the R143s until 2007. One train? If anyone from MTA Exec. reads this, just CANCEL the R188 contract and put the money into another B Division car order to clear this car shortage that we're currently experiencing. Aqueduct Posted August 28, 2010 Share #48 Posted August 28, 2010 Automated trains never sounded like a good idea, also wouldn't homeless people who live in subway cars be considered foamers. They spend endless hours in subway cars and have about the same smell as an average foamer.

R110B Posted August 28, 2010 Share #50 Posted August 28, 2010 The last time they did Automated trains one of the trains used caught on fire. It was tested for two years and two years after being tested a fire destroyed the station and the automated train. This is was the result. http://nycsubway.org/perl/show?45970 The equipment by the way was still new at that time. That was then they had experimental wiring in the 42nd st (S)huttle R22 Cars it was doing good but then obviously things happen we learn from them and perfect the next successor to the program. I say let them waste the money now so by the time the other lines turn robo we will have successfull Reliable Service.
