Subway & bus upgrades have not been derailed, insists MTA

Top MTA officials insisted Wednesday that service upgrades promised when bus and subway fares were hiked have not been derailed.

"We can assure you unequivocally that we will go forward," Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Dale Hemmerdinger said at the monthly MTA board meeting.

"It is simply an issue of timing," he added. "We are taking a breath, not holding our breath, so we can assess the larger regional and national economic landscape."

On Monday, officials announced that tax revenues the MTA receives on certain real estate transactions dropped more precipitously in March than the authority projected in its budget.

MTA CEO Elliot Sander said he hopes any implementation delays will be limited to just a few months.

Under the original schedule, the first batch of upgrades were not to begin until June with the rest coming on line in the second half of the year.

As of today the Service increases in the Subdivision B will still go into effect do to the fact the work programs with the increases are out and are picking our new jobs to begin in June. The picking process started March 17 and no plans to cancel it. So you got (:D(W) Train until 11:30 and the (M) going to Broad St to 10:30PM.
