Question regarding the R44s

Please don't attack me for a redundant thread but I just want to know if there is a firm date for the end of the R44's on the C. I have seen R44's running this week. How many R44's sets are there in C service - 8?. I always liked the R44's (again don't attack me - this is my preference - I don't hate other subway cars) as they were the newest cars in the system when I started riding the subway on a regular basis to high school in 1974. When I see one on the C, I think how the C was going to be all R44 this year if not for the structural problems discovered late last year. I saw set 5398-5401 Wednesday evening. It was noisy as hell as it sat in the station (the R44's always have been). I guess no maintenance is being performed on these cars other than on the HVAC units. Having been a regular E train rider over the years I have no love for the R32's although I have to admit they still look good, much better than the 38's,40's and 42's looked before they went to sea. I have not seen any of the remaining 42's in service on the J/Z as I don't ride that line so I cannot comment on how they look. As for the E train now, I love the R160's and think there would be a big uproar from E riders if R32's somehow found there way back to the E. As the only car that ran on the E for close to 20 years, E riders have had their fill of R32 cars.

Honestly, nobody knows when those R44s will be officially retired. They were supposed to be gone since JUNE! But it's now September and they are still here!!! As far as I know, there is only 1 set of R44s left and they are on the C. But IDK, hope this lil bit of info helps;)

same with the R42s on the (J) the line masters can easily ground those at ENY yard and use em for just put ins for the (Z) so best thing to do is, get out there, ride the R44s while they are still around. If there is a definative date of retirement, chances are you'll hear about it here

The R44s were never going to be gone by June, it was and still s planned for then to be gone around the end of September as I have been told by CED. It looked like they might have been gone back in July because of the rate at which they were been taken OOS.

All I know, is that there are about 4, may be 5 sets that have been Moth Balled in C.I.Y. with a few still in service on the Charlie.

There are alot more then 5 sets at CIY and most are not "moth balled" they have had their guts ripped out and will not see service ever again.

Ah, so there is more then. Only from a distance I seen they they looked like they were still in operable condition, but of course, you should know anyway. Thanks for the info. Do you know how many sets are sitting there stripped?

Last time I looked, there were 6 or 7 sets out in the yard some were operable, but most were not. There were 4 cars in the shop having their E Cam groups ripped out and controllers removed along with other parts.

Understood. What would probably happen now, is that the TA will sell off a few parts like the End Roll Sign, and etc... Those scraps most likely will not see Weeks 297 and just be shipped off through South Brooklyn. BTW, did you see the progress going on down there lately? Last I checked, they built a new roadbed through the parking lot. I believe Skanska (contractor) needs to knock down a short wall into the sidewalk and continue the roadbed on 1st avenue.

I had that set Wednesday morning to school I agree that basterd was LOUD that was the south motor I believe. And yea at 1st the R44's were ***SUPPOSED*** to be gone ***BY*** September mind you by means before so before September and it's the 17th and they're still here then things were pushed back lots of sets were taken out of service in June and July and they were supposed to be gone by May then July now September and still here. But enjoy the classic rides they'll be missed no matter how junky they're b\c the 160 haters better hope the new fleet will be good like the R142/A & 3's.

There was one of the A line the other day.

They will be all retired shortly. R32's have had air conditioning problems, same crap every summer as they have trouble handling the "load". With the tunnels starting to cool down, the a/c's won't have to work as hard so less failures.

Next summer will be interesting on the C.

"Shortly" has now become "already" from what I found out today.

BTW: just came back from a retirement party and spoke to an RTO manager from Pitkin Yrd. He told me the R44's are not coming back and they have no idea what they're going to do next summer when the R32's a/c craps out again. It looks like it's not an easy fix and if they can indeed fix it it will cost money NYCT doesn't want to spend. Hopefully by then R46 availability will be better as SMS is finished on the whole fleet and better availabilty of cars as Pitkin whips them back into shape and keeps them that way.

The faulty A/C is something that yard maintenance will have to stay on top of.

Thanks for the info Bill. Do you know if the SMS that is "planned" for the R32s will do anything to the A/Csor might an A/C fix be it's own program?

Don't know for sure but I really doubt it.

There are many more on the roster than are actually needed for C service so I think they'll just find a way to get enough cars every day. I have a relative who works at 207 in car maintance and tells me several cars are already "parts sources". Sorry, no #'s available.

Very interesting Bill, I know someone on here is going to flip out about R32s being stripped for parts. I'll have to go look for those cars next time I make my way up town.
