IRT footage from the 1940's to the 70's:

 

 

IND and BMT from the 1940's to the 80's - this vid is fantastic(loved seeing the R-9 KK & J cars on the Jamaica line in the 70's and seeing 168th St. station in action before it was torn down, MTA racing stripe R-27/30's on the CS, R-32's, racing stripe and dark green R-10's to Rockaway, R-11's, R-40 slants ,R-38's, blue striped R-44's and so on )

The probable reason the flipdot side signs didn't expand fleet-wise was that, unlike the bulkhead flipdots on the 32s and 38s that are lit up from the bottom casing, these ones on this 44 set weren't lit up. They'd be nearly impossible to see the signs in the dark.
