4P3607 Posted February 5, 2011 Share #151 Posted February 5, 2011 Wait. Are the R40 slants completly gone now? yes, all of them Are out of service. A few of them are still in Yards (ENY, Rockaway Park) and used for school cars (but just stay there). None of them are in Revenue Service.
The Tram man Posted February 5, 2011 Share #152 Posted February 5, 2011 About that, i never understood the point of the school cars. What are they used for, as i assume they are most(if not all), are car types that have been retired?
speedyracer90 Posted February 5, 2011 Share #153 Posted February 5, 2011 Man I wish they would have kept the long window doors on the R40S/M and the R42's. I'm actually surprised the pay phone in that station is working.

IRT Bronx Express Posted February 5, 2011 Share #157 Posted February 5, 2011 Wait. Are the R40 slants completly gone now?:cry:What was not mentioned yet was that the slants were retired since June 2009.
Joe Posted February 5, 2011 Share #158 Posted February 5, 2011 Photos of Slants within the past ten years or so don't really count as "nostalgia", hah.

INDman Posted February 5, 2011 Share #161 Posted February 5, 2011 Would you say the same for Redbirds, R44s, and R38s? Yes, unless there pre GOH photos. Hell the R44s just came out of service and are not even officially retired as a car class. School car still has to break in new T/Os on the R44s just in case they see service this summer.

INDman Posted February 5, 2011 Share #163 Posted February 5, 2011 Question do you think the GOH program even though necessary kind of ruined the looks of the R32-46 cars? I don't think so with the redbirds since not much was changed appearance wise other then the paint scheme. But I did think it killed the look of the R40M and R42s, the R40 slants already looked like crap and GOH made them look better. The R44/46, they came out looking ok, the only thing they really lost was the blue stripe.

Joe C Posted February 5, 2011 Share #165 Posted February 5, 2011 There is only eight left in existence. 4280-4281 are saved for preservation and their are six others being used as school cars. One pair is at the East New York yard, another pair is at Concourse, and finally a pair at the Rockaway Park yard. ENY doesn't have an R40 slant, that set went to another yard or was scrapped.

LRG Posted February 5, 2011 Share #167 Posted February 5, 2011 It probably went to another yard. They have picture of it in early 2009. Don't know if it was scrapped or not, but it's listed as a school car and I pretty much don't know when was the last time that sheet was updated. There are eight pairs of Slants left on property: two pairs (four cars) at Concurse, one pair (two cars) at Rockaway Park, and one pair for the transit museum.

And some of the school cars will soon be gone.
OC Transpo 8238 Posted February 6, 2011 Share #169 Posted February 6, 2011 Stupid question, What are school cars?
INDman Posted February 6, 2011 Share #170 Posted February 6, 2011 Stupid question, What are school cars? There retired cars where new conductors and train operators have their training classes. Soon they will all be replaced with classroom space in trailers and the subway cars will be scrapped.

I thought they learnt how to drive those types of cars in them.

INDman Posted February 6, 2011 Share #173 Posted February 6, 2011 Oh, so they're only like classrooms! I thought they learnt how to drive those types of cars in them. Why would they use them to teach new employees how to operate equipment that's no longer used? Plus, almost all of the school cars can't move under their own power since parts have been taken from them.
4P3607 Posted February 7, 2011 Share #174 Posted February 7, 2011 I thought school cars were trains that trained new T/O's. have a look at this video: anyways, back on topic. Nostalgia!:
