metsfan Posted October 26, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2010 Not too bad for 1st test, and nice catches! It seems like you were struggling a bit to get a focus reference point. I find that the best measure is going to be the rails where you expect the equipment to be on at the spot where you want to capture it. I do this all the time and even from a moving train i get ok results. Moving train, math here, my train stationary up to 100 mph, the other train same thing. Even with both trains going 100 i can still pull off decent "speed" shots. NJT bars use of tripods (spotty enforcement) on station platforms as it is a safety hazard, however you can use a monopod. Also, a few stations such as linden, rahway, edison, metuchen have switches in or near the station limits, and a train crossing over these switches at speed usually is fairly loud clanking sound, it can trigger an involuntary reflex flinch or twitch that could mess up your shot, just to give you a heads up. Elizabeth, the airport, new brunswick, hamilton, princeton junction, and trenton do not have these switch issues, but it could cost more to go to these places. Welcome to the forums & good luck with your camera, and if you want me to email you my (NJT) photo policy email for you to print out & carry on you just PM me. - A

553 Bridgeton Posted October 26, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2010 From the cab it looks way better! The last time I was comming back from NYC I got to ride in the cab on the trenton super express from penn. I hope one day I can become an engineer. But might be a long way before that can happen. You dont see any young guys like you do in NYCT.

metsfan Posted October 30, 2010 Share #13 Posted October 30, 2010 newark penn since cops are around and metropark since they got cameras on the platform i could do them on the dl Like i said you can PM me for the (NJT) photography policy email they sent me. They don't care about people taking photos, most that will happen is cops might ask to see your photos, just doing their job & protecting the railroad. I've taken photos at metropark one time when i was goofing around a while back, and newark penn, that's like a good quarter of my photos right there. My favorite spots to do stills are trenton and the airport and hoboken with newark here and there when i'm not running for a train. My favorite spot to do vids are hamilton, princeton jct, levittown (in land), airport, and newark penn. When you're taking photos, don't try to hide your activities, will just make you look suspicious. Just take your photos and don't worry bout it, it's an activity huge numbers of people get involved in, especially in NJ. - A
