EE Broadway Local Posted November 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2010 In terms of layout, stores, food courts, amenities and transit (buses and subways or commuter rail/PATH/HBLR/Newark Light Rail at or convient to the mall), how would you rate Metropolitan New York City's Malls that you visit or have visited? Forest Glen Posted November 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 4, 2010 1) Palisades Mall-the best mall I've ever been to. It has arcades, an ice rink, bowling alley, movie theatre, ferris wheel, as well as various restaurants, bars, chain stores (Target, Old Navy, Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, etc). There are also a bunch of miscellaneous stores that sell toys, flamboyant clothing, and other random stuff 2) Roosevelt Field-it has a Di ck's Sporting goods, Mets Clubhouse store (Mets suck), this other store that sells sports memorabilia, an Apple Store, Lego Store, and this store that sells weird gadgets (not Spencer, I forgot the name but it's cool). Roosevelt Field also has the generic mall stores (though there's no McDonald's). Out of all the malls I've been to, Roosevelt Field has the hottest chicks 3) Queens Center Mall-Queens Center Mall has improved dramatically over the years. It's still not in the league of Roosevelt Field. There are a plethora of toy stores, clothing stores, and sneaker stores. They added a Five Guys to the food court (Five Guys is tasty but overpriced). Queens Center Mall lacks variety-there is no book store. Still, it's a nice place to hang out. If I'm in the area, I stop by. I wouldn't go all the way from the Bronx to Queens Center Mall 4) Newport Centre Mall-a mall in Jersey City that packs a lot in a tiny space. It had a FYE, various clothing stores, a decent food court, and a Kohls. A few blocks away is a Target, Staples, and Modells. The PATH station isn't that far from the mall. The HBLR stops right outside the mall. 5) Green Acres Mall-as hard as it is to believe, Green Acres has improved over the years. It was renovated so it's less tacky looking. I miss the 2nd floor arcade. There is a Walmart on the other side of the mall. This mall isn't that great, but it's not as bad as its reputation 6) Kings Plaza-quite possibly the worst mall I've ever been to. Every negative stereotype of Brooklyn is represented at this mall. It looks big from the outside, but it's tiny. The stores are in disarray and there's no real food court.
Joel Up Front Posted November 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 4, 2010 1. Green Acres2. Queens Center 3. Roosevelt Field How in the name of all that is holy is GA #1? You need to take a few trips down to Roosevelt Field. Biggest mall in terms of gross leaseable area (how much space there is for stores) and it's a damn sight better than Green Acres. GA should have stayed a farm. I don't know how you'd keep your stuff safe if you had to take an N22 or N24 to the or 165th Street.... I also forgot that there is no Mickey D's or BK at Roosevelt Field, but there's a Haagen Dazs (the one in GA closed, much to my chagrin) hidden in RF. I.M. Pei kinda had a brain fart with his design of the mall. The only real place you can remember is the bus terminal by Ring Road South.
Fresh Pond Posted November 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 4, 2010 I use Fulton Mall (though not technically a "mall" per se) and Atlantic Mall in Downtown Brooklyn. They have everything I need downtown, including a Guitar Center (I go through drumsticks a lot). There's 13 subway lines and about 14 different bus lines (I might have missed one or 2) in the general areaso there's no way of getting lost
SoSpectacular Posted November 4, 2010 Share #7 Posted November 4, 2010 Roosevelt Field is my top mall when it comes to shopping. I frequent it a lot these days. Queens Center is my next choice, before the expansion in 2004 it wasn't that interesting but with all the extra shopping choices, hot damn! Green Acres I haven't stepped foot in since 2006 when I went to Modell's to get a new jacket for the winter. I heard it was remodeled within the past three years but I've yet to see the changes. Oh, and word's going around that the Walmart over there is attempting to become a supercenter once it begins its remodeling, the Walmart where I do overnights at is almost done with its remodeling. Has anyone forgotten about Sunrise Mall? It's pretty boring now but a good while ago it was a decent shopping locale along with its aquarium filled with koi fish. They were pretty cool to look at! LRG Posted November 4, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 4, 2010 Staten Island Mall...my hangout spot after school in which I check out the Apple Store to go on the computers for a bit, eat (I usually buy fries to eat on the bus but if it's something like a large meal I eat at the food court), the skateboarding shops (e.g. Zumiez, Vans) and some of the clothing stores (Aeropostale, Hollister, and the two skate shops I just mentioned that sells clothing as well). Infamous85 Posted November 4, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 4, 2010 Garden State Plaza & Roosevelt Field are like sisters; I go to both and they along with Palisades Center are my favorite malls in the NYC Area. Green Acres, it has improved a lot but it's still not "there" yet but it's the closest Mall to me and it's still better than most malls. Surprisingly it's the 16th largest mall in the country. I'm a Queens native and I've only been to Queens Center 3 times, I know I hate those damn shaky escalators especially when you're 3 stories in the air. Oh and @Joel there is a Burger King at Roosevelt Field, however it's not at the Food Court. It's by an exit on the first floor. I tend to shop at outlets such as Tanger though, I'll get jeans and some shirts from a mall but I get other stuff from Outlets.

Infamous85 Posted November 4, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 4, 2010 Roosevelt Field has a Burger King. The Palisades is twice the size of Roosevelt Field. Top 20 Largest Malls in America: 8. Roosevelt Field (2,244,581 sq feet; 294 stores) 10. Palisades Center (2,217,322 sq feet; 400 stores) 13. Garden State Plaza (2,132,112 sq feet; 346 stores) 18. Green Acres Mall (2,025,794 sq feet; 230+ stores) http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_shopping_malls_in_the_United_States?wasRedirected=true However this is based on retail space, I think the store count gives a little bit of an optical illusion. I was actually surprised by this list a while back, Green Acres doesn't feel that big because it doesn't have nearly as much non-retail space as the other 3. So in actuality Palisades may be slightly larger than Roosevelt Field because I know it has a lot of non-retail space but I wouldn't say twice as large. Roosevelt Field & The Garden State Plaza always felt the same size to me. Can't wait for Xanadu, it's gonna be the largest mall in the U.S. Roosevelt Field also has a Wendy's (Burger King is on one side of the food court while the Wendy's is on the other side). Burger King isn't at the Food Court unless they recently moved it, I haven't been to Roosevelt Field since September. They had/have their own fully fledged Burger King restaurant in the Mall. It's by an exit/entrance.
Forest Glen Posted November 5, 2010 Share #13 Posted November 5, 2010 Maybe the ferris wheel and skating rink make the Palisades look bigger than it actually is. In any case, the Palisades is my favorite mall.

Every negative stereotype of Brooklyn is represented at this mall. It looks big from the outside, but it's tiny. The stores are in disarray and there's no real food court. Based on how long ago? [When was the last time you actually went inside?] I last went there in 2005 and the interior looked like any other mall I've been to in Jersey. Sure nothing special about it, but hardly anywhere near as bad as you described it. Also what's a 'real food court'? Has anyone thought about going to Edmonton because they have a heck of a shopping mall there. Their indoor amusement park looks pretty neat, but not sure I'm making a trip there just for that. Mall of America is one place I'd totally would love to visit one of these years. Manhattan Mall - disappointing how small it's gotten over the years. The last straw was turning the basement [bottom 2 floors] into a JCPenny and taking away the food court [which used to be all the way up on the 7th floor]. A total shame. Macy's at HS - totally awesome especially with those wooden escelators. So cool that they still have them and so many of them. I don't have anything to buy there, but I stop there time to time when they have holiday stuff at the lobby.
B35 via Church Posted November 5, 2010 Share #16 Posted November 5, 2010 I fux with Palisades mall & Woodbury common... That's really about it. Everything else (out of the malls I've ever been to, I mean) is secondary, or lesser, to me... as for malls that's been listed in this thread so far.... * RFM I always thought was overrated (good mall, but overrated); something about it I never cared for... Jersey Gardens, and the Galleria (White Plains) also falls into this category..... * Manhattan Mall has been absolutely decimated over the past few years... they're trying to cater to a more upper scale crowd (than what MM used to cater to in the past; which was pretty much anyone)... don't believe that? then walk around & notice the bevy of security guards roaming about the place.... * Fulton Mall is gonna end up like MM in the next 5 years... the days of the thugs, hoods, and niggy's reigning supreme in that area are winding down... they're trying to yuppify downtown brooklyn (and everything north of it) anyway.... the tearing down of albee square mall (I'ma always call it that), the re-routing of buses, & the fixing of the roads/street lights is just the start.... * Kings Plaza IS a goddamn joke... they (residents of marine park) wanted "urban" folk out of "their" mall since "we" took it over in the 80's & the 90's.... yeah now they fixed it up... yeah they got their wish, well sort of; you still get some hapless fools that travel a good distance on the B41, 46, and 47 to get to that crummy mall.... ...and that's exactly what KP is... fools gold... putting lipstick on a freakin pig... You know what the direct result was of having that mall renovated (mind you, they did this after some kid fell down an escalator and eventually died - guess that was the straw that broke the camel back for them)... Most the stores that the "urban" folk used to frequent, are pretty much gone (blame that on the recession if you'd like, I don't think that was the only factor)... why do you think there are duplicate stores for such a small mall, and to boot, the closing of the movie theatre... that was no accident either.... I say it's the worst mall in NYC, hands down. IDC if KP turns into a hole in the ground. * Green acres, to me, is a much larger version of what kings plaza used to be... that's not a good thing, nor necessarily a bad thing... * I haven't been in Queens center mall & Newport Mall since the day of the flood, so I'm not gonna comment on the in's & out's of either of those malls.... * Sunrise mall... it's like a ghost-town inside that mall... last I heard, the local skater punks, the emo kids, or w/e the hell you call them, took that mall over.... same exact thing that happened out there at atlas mall... * Atlantic mall isn't the greatest... I say it's ok-ish, but sadly, it's the best we have in Brooklyn right now.... They need to get that dam DMV out of there though; it's not a good look.... and GC.... kings plaza doesn't have a real food court.... don't know if you trying to play devil's advocate there, but FG is right.... there is no one centralized place in KP where people can congregate at & have their choice on what they feel like eating... I mean for god sakes, look how obscure an area where that nathan's is at.... to be frank (lol), it doesn't matter to me if a mall has a food court or not... as long as I can grab something to eat in (or the direct area outside) a mall, I'm good.... some people cry about malls not having food courts; I suppose they have somewhat of a gripe, but I aint one of those people.... side note: wow at the mall at Short Hills... you have to got to have Scrooge McDuck money to shop in that place... never again will I go out there.... this is a mall where you LITERALLY see the typical well off 40+ year old couple; the husband with the long leather jacket & the walking stick, and the wife with the poofy fur/mink coat - both with their noses up at anyone who they deem financially inferior to them.... By far, that is the most snobbish ass mall I've ever stepped foot into.... and get this... they have VALET PARKING in that sumbitch. Valets ! Infamous85 Posted November 5, 2010 Share #18 Posted November 5, 2010 Who can forget the Coliseum Mall? Lmao the fugliest, beat down, Bangkok side street mall in the United States, I'd say this is easily the worst Mall in NYC and the country. I hate that place. Gertz too but they closed it, I only went there once. I stopped messing with "The Ave" a long long time ago. That place is just ugh. MM - upper scale? Perhaps, all I know is they've gutted that place to hell with more floors being taken over for some office space. I mean what happened to the back of the place where the Sterns used to occupy? JCPenny could've taken that spot than to occupy the bottom two floors including the food court. Ok, fair enough about KP, I'm not defending the place. But concidering the location and what they have there, it's hardly terrible imo [could be worse, didn't know about the theater being closed down though, but they were shit and needed to be rennovated or closed down]. Then again I hardly go to malls often. So my standards of malls aren't set very high anyway. Far as food there goes, went to the McDonalds once and that's pretty much it for me. I'm not that big on food courts anyway. Don't care either way.

Agree with every bit of it. more about the galleria... there was a point & time where people (mainly bronxites & Mt Vernon & Y-O residents) got sick of Cross County, and started shelling out a few extra bucks for the MNRR to white plains to go hit up the galleria... the result of that, was the ghett-rification (lol) of the shopping area surrounding downtown white plains... it actually used to be a decent surrounding/area before the fact.... now the galleria (more specifically, anywhere around the parking lot; martine av/MLK) has inherited a stigma of being a dangerous area to venture around out at night.... (quite honestly, I'd be a little more wary of the residential part of downtown WP outside the shopping area, @ night....) IINM, one of the gripes, was also about the #20 bus, and it not taking you to the back end of the mall, like the #25/26 does... well anyway, you know what's funny about all that now though... cross county's done some switching up about the place, for the better, as of late... while the misinformed still venture out to white plains..... to each its own, I suppose
Shortline Bus Posted November 6, 2010 Share #22 Posted November 6, 2010 Living upstate now, the only major NYC malls I visit when i get a chance is either Queens Center or SI Malls. When i go railfanning in the 5 boros, I miss the unquie shopping hubs that NYC has from Canal St., 125th St, Fulton Mall in Brooklyn, the world famous 5th Ave strip in Midtown among a few. Within a hour drive I got all of the major 'box stores' i.e Wal Mart, Target, K-mart, Sears and more to go to.

B35 via Church Posted November 7, 2010 Share #24 Posted November 7, 2010 Why bother with shopping malls when you can shop online from the comfort of your home? You can't wait a couple of days for delivery? malls were big in the 80's...... the faster you want your item(s), the more (shipping fees) you have to pay.... and it's not like it's 5 dollars here, 10 dollars there... I only shop online where I can't find something "in person", so to speak... when I'm willing to wait more than 2 weeks (b/c that's too many days otherwise to wait for something you really want w/i a reasonable timeframe), and on top of all that, I have to find a site that accepts money orders.... I work during the day..... so I'm not gonna have something delivered to my job, and I don't trust my neighbors w/ my shit.... Everyone doesn't live w/ a relative/friend that stays home all day.... and you have to pay more for saturday delivery, believe it or not (this is what you'll never know if you haven't dealed w/ UPS or FedEx enough).... besides, shopping online on a lot of sites nowadays require you to have a credit card... Of which I don't have, or even want... But even if I did have one, I would be leery as hell typing something as confidential/sensitive like a CCN on some website.... with the way keyloggers can manifest itself onto your computer w/o you even knowing... nah, I'm good on that tip.... plus, I like to get up out the house on a weekend... venture to places outside of the city... this is why/where I come to realize that malls in general in NYC.. aren't worth the price of admission (lol) anymore.... Yes, malls were big in the 80's... It's not the experience of "OMG, I'm going to a mall" why I go to them... it's not even a weekly thing w/ me (last mall I stepped foot in, was paramus park mall, and that was after fanning a NJT route b/c I had to take a leak... lol... which was almost 2 months ago)... But when I'm planning to go to a mall, (like most men) I know what I want before I leave my house to go to one... So I get what I want to get if it's there... ...and then I'm ghost. You can't wait a couple of days for delivery? malls were big in the 80's...... Not to sound cliche, but I love the experience. Most of the stuff at Roosevelt Field is overpriced. I could find it cheaper elsewhere in the city. However, I love checking out those hot white girls from Long Island. I also like looking at those weird gadgets at that store I previously mentioned. Once, Yogi Berra signed autographs at the mall. At the Palisades, they have arcades. There aren't that many real arcades left in the city. Also, the mall is so big that you could spend all day walking around. In my 25 years on this planet, I've never bought anything from the Macy's in Herald Square. Nevertheless, I like seeing the Christmas decorations every year.
