Messino Posted November 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2010 So I guess this is what happens when your employer doesnt like you making political contributions with your hard earned money... http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1110/44734.html MSNBC host Keith Olbermann has been suspended indefinitely without pay after POLITICO reported that he made three campaign contributions to Democratic candidates. MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement Friday: “I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay." East New York Posted November 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2010 Even though I love all the other hosts, I will no longer be watching MSNBC. This is bullshit. You should be able to do whatever you want with your money as long as its legal! I hope they are ready for the ratings hit!

You should be able to do whatever you want with your money as long as its legal! I hope they are ready for the ratings hit! As a moderate and Independent voter being fair, i wonder if Fox News Hosts/Analysts like O' Riley, Hannity, Beck make donations to their mostly GOP friends? If so (i suspect their boss Mr. Mudrock allows it)then it's a bad job by MSNBC. As a whole either allow any or all in the news biz to be able to make donations or none at all being fair. I also suspect this could a ploy by MSNBC and their new Owners Comcast to get either get rid of him or take a pay cut. Olbermann's makes as much as $2 Million a year from what I read and has their highest rated regular show. If he leaves MSNBC, Olbermann should go to the MLB Network where he loves baseball and return to a sportscasting commentator job that better suited for him. When he was at ESPN, he was maybe the best Sportscenter Anchor ever.

Shortline Bus Posted November 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 5, 2010 Lord, give me strength. "NBC News policy and standards." The official policy which is, of course, that consent is required from the top -- read Phil Griffin -- before a donation. Joe Scarborough (host of another MSNBC show) seemed to do fine giving away $4,200 to Republican candidate Derrick Kitts. NBC's mature response was that Joe Scarborough was an opinion program host, while Olbermann was a reporter. Anybody who has watched Keith Olbermann and thinks he is not at all biased (albeit, intelligently and correctly) to one side really needs to take a step back. MSNBC, where a donation to a political candidate is fine, unless the candidate is a Democrat. Eventually every television news channel will be a festival of Conservative personalities. Again I think this is ploy by MSNBC/NBC's new owners Comcast who much more conservative than previous owners GE(General Electric)in trying to make him take a huge pay cut or even leave that low rated cable news station. And the Comcast majority takeover still has to be approved by the DOJ, which has asked for more documentation from both parties.

East New York Posted November 5, 2010 Share #9 Posted November 5, 2010 Right, and: http://mediamatters.org/research/201010270005 Why am I not surprised! @Shortline, MSNBC is highly rated. Their prime-time lineup frequently passes the rating of CNN, and Fox programming. Not anymore! They can hang that one up!

When he was at ESPN, he was maybe the best Sportscenter Anchor ever. He violated company policy plain and simple. What hosts on other networks do means nothing. Upon looking into this a little bit more, I don't see why he should be suspended. The rules apparently state that JOURNALISTS can't make contributions to political campaigns. Why then would this effect Olbermann, who is in no way shape or form a journalist, he is a commentator which is something very different. He is on the same level as Beck, Hannity, or Rush. They are not reporters so I think that is why (aside from being employed by different companies with different rules) they can make contributions to political groups. East New York Posted November 6, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 6, 2010 See my first post. The worst bit of this suspension is the fact that Joe Scarborough of MSNBC got off the hook for exactly the same thing, with NBC claiming he was a "commentator," while Olbermann was a "reporter." A reporter? Please. He may be intelligent, but he's nothing near a reporter. So yes, Olbermann may have violated company policy, but so did Scarborough, saved by the clause you mentioned. Phil Griffin has always hated Olbermann, so I'm sure he jumped at the chance to out him. Right. Scarborough is the networks top Republican. I didn't care for Scarborough Country, but I do enjoy Morning Joe. Keith is the top Liberal, and I loved his show. This is a double standard. And you may not know it Shoreline, but GE isn't all that liberal of a company. Comcast is more liberal than GE. NBC is neutral, CNBC is conservative, and MSNBC is liberal. Shortline Bus Posted November 7, 2010 Share #13 Posted November 7, 2010 So who is the replacement for Olbermann during this time and if ever comes back to MSNBC?
Santa Fe via Willow Posted November 8, 2010 Share #14 Posted November 8, 2010 Keith will be back. Probably on CNN. Tavis Smiley would make a good replacement for Keith. I think Tavis could draw viewers away from FOX & CNN.

R68 Subway Car Posted November 11, 2010 Share #22 Posted November 11, 2010 I will say this as a conservative: Bring back Olbermann. I cant stand him, but I believe in his right to freedom of speech. I believe in free speech and I would be stupid to say fire him. I believe that you have the right to free speech, whether your conservative or a liberal. Grand Concourse Posted November 11, 2010 Share #24 Posted November 11, 2010 This is why I don't watch any of them. I just want my news and that's it. I don't want opinions about it. If I want opinions, that's what talk radio is for little o/t: but they better not bring up the fairness doctrine. Air America was an all liberal network and they lost money on their own. It shows either they can't cut it on their own or maybe no one really cares about them unless they snatched up a local network station. NPR should be forced to stand on its own as well otherwise they should start cutting back on their programming.

I miss the days of Cronkite(his last couple of years as CBS Anchorman)Brokaw and Peter Jennings. While I don't mind having partisans like Olberman, O' Riley, Hannity or Matthews on the news stations I really don't like how MSNBC only has mainly Liberals for their talk shows (except for Scarborough's Morning Show)and Fox for Consertative views. I am with GC on this one. I listen to either the radio or read the newspapers for partisan views on today's poltical news.
