Joel Up Front Posted November 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2010 And I mean only travelling one or two towns away from the station you get on at. Say I get on at Baldwin and want to get off at Rockville Centre or Lynbrook... do people do that?
PATCOman Posted November 9, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 9, 2010 sure, just get a ticket for the station you are travelling to.

Amtrak7 Posted November 9, 2010 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2010 Be careful (if you are boarding at Valley Stream). You must read the schedule carefully to make sure the train you want actually stops there. This is one of the cases where I recommend the MTA's scheduling tool: http://lirr42.mta.info/sfweb/faces/index.jspx
EE Broadway Local Posted November 9, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 9, 2010 And it's actually inexpensive, too. If you board, say, in Brentwood, and ride to Ronkonkama on the Main Line, the fare is $2.50 all day if purchased at Station/TVM or $2.38 all day if purchased on the web. And if you ride a little futher, that's not too bad, either. Brentwood to Yaphank on the Main Line is also $2.50/$2.38 all day. Just check the schedule if your trip involves going from an electrified area to a diesel area or vice versa.
Forest Glen Posted November 9, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 9, 2010 There are people who take the LIRR from Flushing to Great Neck. The outbound platform at Flushing has a decent amount of people.

The rule for short intermediate travel: If you are not starting in or entering NYC (except Far Rock), the fare for a trip within a zone or crossing one zone boundary is $2.50. This rule does not apply for trips entering Zone 14 either.
metsfan Posted November 9, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 9, 2010 Be careful at forrest hills as well, many trains bypass it. - A
Joel Up Front Posted November 10, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted November 10, 2010 In my case, I have a Best Buy in Baldwin I go to when I get money (and I do), but I don't feel like having to wait for three buses (N25-N4-N35)... I could just take the N25 to Lynbrook and get on the LIRR there, because Lynbrook is closer than VS (and no buses go by VS Station anymore...) and Lynbrook and Baldwin are on the same branch. It seems that not many trains stop at Lynbrook, though...

Assuming you're traveling off-peak, there is hourly service. Be sure to use platform A at Lynbrook, or you'll end up at Long Beach!
EE Broadway Local Posted November 10, 2010 Share #11 Posted November 10, 2010 Okay..... You want to go from Lynbrook on The Long Beach Branch to Baldwin on The Babylon Branch. That's a little different. What makes it different is from Lynbrook, you need a Babylon Branch train to reach Baldwin and you need a train that goes via Direct. Lynbrook To Baldwin: Via Direct: $2.50 Station/TVM; $2.38 Web Ticket All Day Via Jamaica - Zone 3: $8.25 Station/TVM $7.84 Web Ticket Peak Via Jamaica - Zone 3: $6.00 Station/TVM $5.70 Web Ticket Off Peak Since Babylon Branch trains stop, Lynbrook has good service: Babylon Branch is hourly, Long Beach Branch is hourly and nights is every two hours. The trick is to get a Lynbrook to Baldwin train and a Baldwin to Lynbrook train via Direct rather than via Jamaica.

PATCOman Posted November 10, 2010 Share #13 Posted November 10, 2010 When I was attending high school in Teaneck, New Jersey, one of my schoolmates went to school in Bayside. After a sporting event, he would ride the $ van to the George Washington Bridge terminal to the to 42 Street for the to Flushing to the LIRR to Bayside than to some bus. If it was off peak hours, he took the to 34 Street to Penn Station for the LIRR. Here is the Babylon Branch schedule: http://mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Branch/BabylonBranch.pdf
