The new I.R.T. Crossunder provides a safe transfer between Uptown and Downtown (1) trains at 59th Street-C.C.. What"s neat about this Crossunder is that it uses part of the previously closed, disused center platform at 59th Street-C.C..

I believe the new Crossunder opened earlier this week.

Since the IRT is shallow at 59th,if you entered on the south side of the station wanting to go northbound 1, or vice versa, you had to work your way along the IND to get to the other side IRT platform. it's more about controling IND level crowding than anything else.

And technically, you still have to walk through IND space to get to the other side.

@Alargule: I may have phrased that wrong. A CrossUnder, such as this, provides a safe way for passengers to change direction within fare control. i.e. If someone enters on the northbound side, but actually wants to go southbound.

Sorry for asking, but what's the use of a transfer between uptown and downtown trains on the same line?

@Eric B. This is the middle IND. platform that has been disused at 59th Street-CC. The new I.R.T. CrossUnder uses part of it.

Is this the middle IND platform being talked about?

I was wondering when all that would be finished.
