lilbluefoxie Posted December 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2010 Has anyone ever noticed the exit numbers on the Cross Bronx are all messed up it goes 1 Route 9A-9 Broadway 2 Harlem River Dr 3 I-87 Major Deegan then it goes back to 2A Jerome Ave 2B Webster Ave 3 Third Ave 4A I-895 Sheridan Expwy 4B Bronx River Pkwy 5 Castle Hill Ave then it goes to 10 I-678 Whitestone 12 I-295 Throgs Neck Bridge but the other direction its Exit 6A and 7A then the next exit is: 8A Orchard Beach-City Island and it goes up normally to 21 I-287 White Plains its like they tried to renumber it but just stopped halfway, and the new signs they put up have the older numbers. Anyone have any info on that
Shortline Bus Posted December 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 8, 2010 I avoid the Cross Bronx like the plague when driving. Not only to deal with the parking lot aka traffic jams 7 days a week, but the potholes as well. What you mentioned Foxie is just icing on the cake on why the Cross Bronx is the highway/freeway, I dislike the most in America. I am sure non-regular drivers always miss that exit and wound up in Ft. Lee and having to pay that $6-$10 toll on the GWB to get back to Upper Manhattan. If I am in that area I rather use the Buckner(not a picnic either)Cross County Pwy or I-287(Cross Westchester Expway.)for east-west travel from NJ/Hudson River to the other side. lilbluefoxie Posted December 8, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted December 8, 2010 personally if I have to go to Jersey or anywhere south from long island, I take the Verrazano and Outbridge Crossings
LRG Posted December 8, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 8, 2010 The Cross Bronx is hell on earth. That throughfare is bombarded with traffic day in and day out. They were supposed to build a second level but that never materialized.
Dan05979 Posted December 8, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 8, 2010 I never noticed those exit numbers but I will look tomorrow while I cross it from the throgs to the 87 @ 2:30am. That expressway I try to avoid it if I can. If i want to go across it I start calling out on the CB to others using it to see what conditions are like. 90% of the time its a death sentence. The worst I ever seen it was a back-up from the G.W all the way north to the New rochelle tolls on the 95. I'll check it out tomorrow I'll try to remember. Shortline Bus Posted December 9, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 9, 2010 Even worse, I've dealt with it backed up from the CT state line....fun times! In that case it might make sense to take I-287 west and then take the Hutch Pwy or I-87 aka NY Thruway/Degan down to the Bronx and other parts of the 'city.' If you take 87 south instead of 95, the traffic will back up into yonkers. especiallyt on a thurs & friday. I've been thru it from bad to horrendous. RokuSix Posted December 9, 2010 Share #10 Posted December 9, 2010 I believe the first three are considered the Trans-Manhattan Expressway and are numbered as such. As for why the Cross Bronx starts with two, I'm not sure. The reason for the weird 6A and 7A is because there aren't exits on the other direction to match those (except for 7C-Country Club Road). I could be wrong though. They just re-numbered the Bruckner, maybe the Cross Bronx will follow.

And Dan is right if the Cross Bronx/GWB is in the shitter, then the Deegan will back up into Yonkers. Taking the Hutch in a 4505 is between you, your god and Peter Pan. We have guys who run the Harlem River Drive on the regular, but why risk the ticket...if the Deegan is THAT bad then I run down Jerome or the Concourse. 553 Bridgeton Posted December 9, 2010 Share #14 Posted December 9, 2010 Cross Bronx Exp. reminds me of i76 down in PA. The traffic is 7 days a week and the potholes are a pain on your car. I spent alot of time on the CBE.

Joel Up Front Posted December 10, 2010 Share #17 Posted December 10, 2010 I thought the Tap was in danger of falling apart. Then again, so are most of the non-DOT/MTA managed bridges.

N-Trizzy2609 Posted December 13, 2010 Share #22 Posted December 13, 2010 The reason why the Cross-Bronx renews it's exit numbers after Major Degan Exit is because the number always start fresh for a new borough. The BQE is also a good example because in Staten Island before the VB, the last exit is Father Capodano Blvd. Exit 2. Then you go to Brooklyn, exit two is 86th Street on the OPPISITE side going back to SI. It's only here and Washington D.C. where the highway number renew every county (borough), otherwise they renew every state.
