What was the <4> like back when it ran? Did it do anything special back in the day?

in this vintage photo from nycsubway.org it seems there was something there listed for <4> seperate from (4) but its hard to make out in the photo.

The <4> in post 1983 meant it just bypassed the 138th St/Grand Concourse station in peak direction rush hours like now. To Manhattan AM Rush and From Manhattan PM Rush. Bascally it's same (4) pattern as now but the "Diamond' was dropped a few years back.

Prior to 1983 the (4)ran to Flatbush during rush hours only and during overnights when the (3)did not run. Weekday Middays from about 10am-2:20pm the (4) Brooklyn Terminal was Atlantic Ave. Weekends the (4) ran to Utica. So it was very confusing as the (4) had '3' Brooklyn terminals during the 1970's and the early '80's.

While the (2)ran to New Lots at all times. The (2) and (3) switched terminals in Brooklyn so that the (3)could have easy acccess to a train which was the Livionia Yards.

Hope it clears it up.

I'm wondering of the <4> roll sign was acually used, even if all of this happened.

Yes young man it was. One of cousins used to live right off the Moshulu Pwy stop on the (4)and my mom used to take me to see her at least 1x a month and spend the weekend. That included using the <4> train that bypassed 138th.

And IRT unlike most of you on the board I was alive in the '80's in grade school/middle school.
