Shortline Bus Posted December 21, 2010 #1 Posted December 21, 2010 Census headcount means two fewer House seats for New York as Sun Belt population grows BY Richard Sisk NY DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU Tuesday, December 21st 2010 "New York will lose two congressional seats due to the continuing shift of population away from the Northeast and Midwest to the South and West, federal officials declared Tuesday. While New York's population grew 2.1% to 19.4 million from 18.9 million in 2000, other states like Texas and Arizona grew at a much more dramatic pace, the official 2010 census showed. This is the second decade in a row New York lost two seats, which will bring its total down to 27 Congressional Districts, 18 less than the Empire State's heyday in the 1950s. New Jersey also lost out and faced the reduction of one more seat to bring its total to a 100-year low of 12 congressional seats. Overall the nation realized only a modest 9.7% rate of growth, similar to the tempered growth rate of the 1980s - and slower than any decade since the Great Depression. Because the population exodus from the Northeast and Midwest to the South and West continued, now begins the musical chairs game of reapportioning the House's 435 seats. The state legislatures in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and other states that showed only modest growth must now alter district boundaries to trim the number of seats. States like Texas - which showed tremendous population growth - get to add seats. In the coming months, Albany will determine how the boundaries of congressional districts must be rejiggered and, thus, which incumbents will be left out in the cold. Because the data is expected to show the city's population grew, the most likely spots for reconfiguration are upstate and Long Island. City data was not released Tuesday but are expected in February. Besides impacting the congressional districts, the Census numbers will translate into a new lineup of presidential electoral votes in each state, which will affect the 2012 election. Traditional Blue States like New York and Massachusetts will see their clout diminish, while more stalwart Red States like Texas, Georgia and Utah will gain electoral votes." Shortline Bus Posted December 22, 2010 Author #3 Posted December 22, 2010 what do you expect, who can afford to live up here anymore? Not to mention places like Texas and Fla. offer *zero* aka nada state sales taxes as well. Also nice year-round weather (although the sun belt states can be damn very hot in middle of summer as well)that hardly gets snow and or very cold temps being icing on the cake.

Shortline Bus Posted December 22, 2010 Author #5 Posted December 22, 2010 If you're serious, it has almost nothing to do with actual population -- more that we had the lowest census turnout around. Pretty pathetic if you ask me, it's not like people are packing up and going to Texas. Majority of New Yorkers I know that relocate to the sun belt go to places like Fla., Va,. North Carolina and California.
EE Broadway Local Posted December 22, 2010 #6 Posted December 22, 2010 Actually, it's Upstate that is losing population. As recently as the 1950's, Buffalo (New York's second largest city) had a city population of 575,000. Rochester, Syracuse and Albany also have lost population since the 1950's. The Southern Tier which is largely rural, has also seen their large cities - Jamestown, Olean, Hornell, Corning, Elmira and Binghamton lose population since the 1960's. By contrast, Downstate - New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess generally has seen population increase. New York may have 19.5 million people, but 8.3/8.4 million are in the five boroughs.

New York may have 19.5 million people, but 8.3/8.4 million are in the five boroughs. Great point. Alot of people left Buffalo/Western NY in the 1980's/early '90's when IBM and many factories closed forever. Buffalo has been on the decline since. Rochester has not been losing residents as much as Buffalo and has tried to re-invent itself as a tech/college smaller city. Univ of Rochester and other schools in the area have been trying to become a major hub for medical research.
Shortline Bus Posted December 22, 2010 Author #8 Posted December 22, 2010 Another thing also. The census also proves that how different Metro NYC/Downstate NY is from rest of NY state.

Shortline Bus Posted December 23, 2010 Author #10 Posted December 23, 2010 Apparently my point was washed over. We don't all need to worry we're losing everybody, as the population changes upstate are trivial compared to the portion of New Yorkers who didn't bother filling out the Census. Truly dumb that people didn't fill it out, took me about two minutes... Good point. I am sure the census nationwide will undercount and miss at least 3-5 Million people. Also there are some dumb people and not trying to sound racial but majority of those who don't fill it out for whatever the reason according to stats are immigrants. Filling out is vital especially for New Yorkers in which not just the Congressional districts are recreated every decade but funding from the to public schools is based on the census data.

Shortline Bus Posted March 28, 2011 Author #12 Posted March 28, 2011 An update. Overshadowded by the military action in Libya and also the ongoing crisis in Japan, the US Census last week made public the 'final report' of the 2010 count. It has become very controversial as several large cities w/ high immgrant populations including NYC have disputed it. Here an article w/ Mayor Bloomberg discussing it and may consider 'legal' actions for the Census Dept. to 'adjust' their final report. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/03/28/2011-03-28_count_on_city_to_challenge_census.html
lilbluefoxie Posted March 29, 2011 #13 Posted March 29, 2011 if you dont fill it out they keep sending people to your house to bother you about it. This one lady kept ringing the bell and banging on the door for liek 30 minutes till she gave up and left and she would come back like every few days
