What do you like to do with your computer?

Totally, i wish i had one. My iBook G4 is circa mid 2005, but it still kicks major ass with most stuff, my dual 1 ghz powermac g4 has a lot more muscle and all most 2x the memory and the best ADC video card you can buy. It is from 2002, and even today i have not found an app that can make it show its age. I would like to get a stock mac pro, but upgraded memory and a few other tweaks, and a macbook pro 15 inch non glossy with maxed memory and the mid end HD and top end gpu. Some folks like to just have good stuff to say they have it, but i actually tend to squeeze every ounce of performance out of my machines. I wish i had the $ for that kind of upgrade... before my current slump in upgrades i went through 18 computers, all macs including a 450 mhz cube.

Throughout the course of my presence in the Mac world, I've owned a PowerBook, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and a Mac Pro... right now I've got the Mac Pro and for some reason, the PowerBook has been faithful to me through thick and thin... I swear I'll never get rid him. But yeah, the current Mac Pro is a powerhouse (believe me, I'm typing on one now). You would see a great upgrade there... 2 processors to 8, my stats tell me you're looking at 10x the raw power . It does sound like you could stand an upgrade, but I'll tell you, what you have right now can fetch a pretty penny, especially if you have the original packaging... you could probably get enough for a refurbished MacBook Pro.

Oh, i know. I wanna keep them though, my dualie i've had only for a year, but i've had my 933 since 2002, and i don't want to part with it. I carried it to the car without box (replacement after repair person screwed up repair really bad) from the short hills (nj) apple store. Yea, and remember i don't drive..... Least they coulda done is let me keep the box it came in!!

Indeed, it is pretty slick, but its purpose is really as a machine to take on the road... you'd be annoyed with the one USB port... certainly it is attractive.

Not really. The only thing i hook into my ibook on a daily basis is the DC plug. I would take it with me everywhere along with my cameras. My iBook is too heavy to take everywhere when i'm standing or walking 95% of the time when i'm out. I would like at least a mac mini to do that wireless cd drive thing with, my g4's dont have the wifi speed for that sadly.

Certainly, the plan sounds good and I've heard a lot of good things about the MacBook Air, but much to the contrary as well... slow small hard drive (the SSD is faster though), noisy fans and heat issues, etc.

however I would get one as an upgrade to my PowerBook, though nothing but a 12" MacBook Pro can replace it. As well, I'd say you should get the USB superdrive for money saving and speed (knowing that 802.11 N never reaches it's peak transfer speed). By all mean though, go for it, it seems like it will work for you.

I got this computer back in 2006 from Dell and it's been my best-performing computer ever since. This past year I managed to throw in a large RAM upgrade, new power supply and video card. I can play a lot of games at high settings and acceptable frame rates. Gaming and web surfing are what I do most, plus using PhotoShop for coloring in drawings!

I remember the good ol' days when Dells had a proprietary ATX connector on the power supply and motherboard. The connector was the same shape as a normal ATX plug, but the pinout was much different. Combining a standard MB or PSU with a Dell MB or PSU would lead to destruction of both units.

They still have the proprietary connector :)

I haven't touched a Dell desktop since the Pentium II/III days, though I do have fond memories of my old OptiPlex GX110.

Those GX110s were great for their days. ( When semiconductors were built for RELIABILITY)

scratch that...those were the ones with the crap capacitors :)

Upgrade to Win 7

I have Windows 7 already. I must say... if it didn't perform well with Windows Vista, it's not going to do much better with Windows 7 since they're pretty much the same thing architecturally. I haven't put Windows 7 to daily use because of performance problems and my computer is pretty good; it's running Ubuntu 9.10 with all the 3-D graphics effects going smoothly and it boots up in 15 seconds.
