Here is the recent R110A & B thread

http://www.nyctransitforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25795&page=6

CKhaleel gave a short, but enough information for a person to get it. The R110A & R110B were new technology test cars. They were never built to last the 40 years of a subway car, and only 10 R110A, and 9 R110B cars were built. The R110A spent most of it's time on the (2), and on some occasions the (4). The R110B spent most of it's time with the (A), and later on the (C).

The R110A were 51 feet long, 8 feet wide, 12 feet high, and had six doors per car. They were delivered in 5 car sets A-B-B-A with set numbers 8000-8010. Seating consisted of 24 in A car, and 28 in B car. They were propelled by Adtranz AC Traction Motors Model 1501A, and were similar to the R62's on the outside except with their squarer ends. They tested technology like bright color seats, but had a seating pattern similar to an R68 with window seats. The interior had fiberglass resistant to graffiti, LED exterior signs, LCD window signs, and interior LED signs similar to the ones in the R142's. (NYC Subway.org)

The R110B were 67 feet long, 10 feet wide, 12 feet high, and had 8 doors per car. They were delivered in three car sets A-B-A with set numbers 3000-3009. Seating consisted of 42 in A car, and 46 in B car. They were propelled by General Electric AC Traction Motors Model GEB 7B, and were similar to the R68's with squarer ends. They tested similar technology to the R110A which is above except the front had a roll sign. The interior colors of the R110B were different from the R110A.

The R110A is out due to fire damage, and break problems, and would never see service again. The R110B is out due to frequent break downs, and low mean distance between failures, and would never see service again.

Before the R110B were officially retired the R110B only ran with 6 cars out of the original 9. The set 3007-3009 were cannibalized for spare parts for the other cars which were frequently breaking down.

Here's the real dish ENY wants to know: INDman revealed that an 'A' and 'B' R110A car will be saved and an R110B 'A' car will be saved, all for the transit museum.

So when do the rest go to scrap?:eek::eek:

They were test NTTs on the (2) and (A) which are now known as the R142 and R160.

So the TA never planned on ordering any more than the two test trains? You mean R142 and R143 right?

That's part of it, and I remember him saying that. I just didn't know the history of the model. BTW, when are they supposed to be worked on for the museum fleet anyway?

@ Roadcruiser1: Thanks. Thats pretty much exactly whats I was looking for!

I can't see where they'd put them at this point for the museum (coney island anyone??), since they can't run without the full set... or a work train. Will they be future static displays like R-11 8013 (maybe not FOREVER ;)), and the Q type?...

No one seems to know when the next barge will be, but a lot of things figure to be going on it when the time comes.

When the barge is coming depends on who you ask and what day you ask the question, the answer seems to change like the wind...

I wish today's NTTs had window seats...like the R110

@ENY, I dont think anymore were ordered (other than the 10 that were in service), as mentioned above, they were not built to last. And yes, I did mean R143, thanks for clarifying.

Like I said they were test trains for new technology, and experimental equipment. They weren't going to be mass produced or mass ordered. They weren't built to last the 40 years of a typical subway car. All the R142's, R143's, and R160's are in a sense upgraded R110A's, and R110B's. To tell you in a real sense they are going to be scrapped. We just don't know when. There might be some that would be conserved for the museum, but we truly don't know. Until then the R110A's can be seen at Concourse Yard. If you want to go there to take a look you can. If they are compatabile with other earlier subway cars we might see them in action, but then again they have been sitting there for 10-11 years. Some people say there are plants growing inside of them. The interior is alright though just a little dusty.

They moved the R110As from Concourse (I was there the day they moved it). Its now sitting up at 240. As for the R110Bs, 2 is on Randall's Island at the FDNY training facillity, one is in front of PS 248 (the (MTA) training school), and the other 6 is in 207 somewhere

If you notice the pictures they removed the glass in the cars with red seats later due to vandalism.

You may want to check that because I saw those cars the other day and I have never been to Randall's Island.

The 3000s are not the R110A those are the R110B. The 8001-8010 is the R110A.
