Car Equipment discovered that rapidly recycling the doors on the R179 fleet was causing some critical door piece to wear down.

The R179s cannot be used again until Bombardier inspects every car replacing falling parts, and re-certifies each train.

Question  if the R179s getting taken off the A,C and J does that mean the R160s will touch the C again ? and does that mean the R32s will touch the J as well just curious  that's all cause I was just wondering.

Bruh, no one really knows what's going to happen. I will assume the C is going to be all R32's if they can help it. I think that would be the easiest solution without having to swap cars back. The J/Z have to make service with whatever they got 42's and 160's, maybe a few sets of 32's. A train probably getting 46's back from Coney, it'll be interesting tomorrow.

ENY will get some R32's since they need at least 4 additional sets with the 50 R42's.

The (C) will probably be all R32's

And the (A) will likely be mostly R46's with borrowed cars from Coney island or wherever. Hoping R160's and R68's.

Most likely R46s for regular fleet experience/recognition, but that's just me

One small door problem should not take an entire fleet out of service. What they would do is do 8-10 cars at a time too see if this works and that works.

but once you retire a fleet, that means you can’t operate them on lines unless if it was for emergency notices.

Bombardier should’ve known about these door issues, but it’s just not about door issues. It’s about money as well. I’ve seen newer fleets taken out of service for a minimum two weeks, then go back in service.

since they are barred from the R211 order due to the fact that they have issues with the R179s, they do have to give the MTA 20 more cars as a compensation

Sooo...... according to a post in a FB group, the entire R179 fleet has been grounded because of a door opening enroute...

Don’t believe in them until you get any reliable sources because all they do is assume that it’s 2019 all over again with them door issues on the R179. You know you get haters that love these older cars to come back ever since Friday.

It's not a rumor, the whole R179 fleet is grounded. This door issue is major, one of the doors opened while the train was running. This incident prompted TA management to take the whole fleet oos until bombardier fix the problem on every consist.

Well ENY just transferred 3 R160's to 207th. (I don't know why it's a waste to since it's not the summer) but hey at least R160's on the (C) once again. So this does indicate some R32's will be transferred to ENY.

That should’ve been a pre-trip inspection. Before anything happens, they should go and inspect cars before being put into service. But things can happen on the run. Now I understand if cracks happen (Like SEPTA’s SLVs or WMATA’s 7000 series that was taken Oos for a few months until each car was inspected)

This is hilarious! However, this is a very serious issue that could have badly hurt or killed someone.

Can't wait for the R42s to come back into service! Change of plans today!

Well there are stickers that say “do not lean on the door” for a reason. I was on a (1) train before and the door opened slightly, but then closed itself, while the train was moving. (R62A, idk the car #)

Besides the point, this is completely outrageous! At least all of the R179s have been delivered, but this is ridiculous.

It was an R179

Quote from Greg mocker

It’s the latest and biggest problem for the newest subway cars.

NYC Transit has removed the R179 cars from service.

In separate statements, both the MTA and Bombardier said 2 doors on cars in the R179 fleet recently failed to function as intended.

NYCT Transit President Andy Byford says the manufacturer, Bombardier Transportation, notified the agency Tuesday night about its analysis of a recent issue

Transit says all passengers were safe but the incident raises questions about the reliability of a door mechanism.

“Out of an abundance of caution, NYCT removed all R179 train cars from service overnight for thorough inspection and re-deployed other spare cars to continue service for this morning’s rush and ensure minimal impacts to customers. I commend the hardworking men and women of New York City Transit for their efforts last evening,” Byford said.

All lines were to be operating at normal service levels with the exception of the J/Z line, where headways have been increased by two minutes in between trains for the AM peak period, and skip-stop service suspended.

NYCT has brought on LTK Engineering Services for an independent third-party review of inspections of the cars.

“As documented, the MTA has identified repeated issues with Bombardier’s performance and finds this latest development unacceptable. We intend to hold the company fully accountable,” Byford added.

A spokesperson for Bombardier says the investigation shows that the doors were not properly calibrated by Kangni, the door operator supplier.

“We are now inspecting all of the R179 cars and, where necessary, making adjustments to ensure the safe and reliable performance of the doors for the entire fleet,” said Bombardier spokesperson Maryanne Roberts.

The company says it has brought in additional technicians who are working around the clock to inspect, calibrate and test the door systems.

“We value our partnership with New York City Transit and are fully committed to providing high quality, reliable, safe rail cars for the millions of people who ride New York’s subway system every day. We will continue to work closely with our customer to make sure that the R179 cars are the best performing cars in New York’s fleet,” Roberts said.

The delivery and roll out of the cars has faced problems and delays.

“Bombardier sold us lemons. Straphangers need the MTA to manage these contracts from the beginning — before the trains go off the rails,” said NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer.

The comptroller issued an audit of the $600-million contract last month criticizing the production and project management.

The MTA has worked to monitor the contract and hold Bombardier accountable.

The agency and company are still determining the timeline for complete repairs.

The A, C J/Z need whatever subway car is available (except 10 car trains on the J/Z) to prevent service interruption.

This current r179 issue is all over the media and the fact that all r179's were pulled oos means that the situation is really BAD!!

The good news is that this issue is being addressed now and not years later and all r179's will go back in service. It's just a matter of when.

For those who are interested, Byford held a news conference today that talks about the R179s.
