Handlebar on the side of the front looks to be a little higher.

That's just one of the changes...

There is less stainless steel surrounding the storm door. Note how on the 160, the handlebars are on the stainless steel and on the 179 they are attached to the fiberglass. Also the area around the lights is slightly different.

Good show, everyone!  Well done to all.

If all works out the rest of the set should be on property by next Monday night.  After they get put together and ogled by every passer-by (inside the 207 facility that is), the (1/2) train will be forwarded to Pitkin for more ogling (this in addition to the schooling), prodding, probing and picking before it gets plugged in (via house electrical), lights up; charges up (via house air), and assuming there are no indeterminate, confounding hissing noises, accomplishes its first subway car-like act:  Going BIE!

A "stah" is Born!

The diagonal arrangement of the headlights is also slightly shallower on the R179.

Why are they numbered incorrectly?? Yes, I'm being weird and its pretty insignificant in the greater scheme of things, but it kinda gets on my nerves a little.... I just feel like the proper way is to start with 1, not zero.....

These cars will have the same propulsion as the R142, right?

The R-179's have a "slightly beefed up" version of the R-142 truck (the one with the "Balloon" air bags vs. the Kawasakis (and later Alstoms) with the side dampers).  They also are equipped with Bombardier's own propulsion system, which is advanced off the former ADTranz version originally employed on the R-142A and R-143.  AFAIK, it's basically identical to that of the (New) R-188's, 7811-7898 and the "C1" cars (7899-7936).

Best of my understanding the R-179 will NOT be operationally compatible with the R-160's; certainly not the CBTC-equipped ones as they provide for, but do not have, CBTC equipment.

An update:

3013 is the next R179 to be sent out of Bombardier, along with an escort. The date may be today or tommorow, depending on the traffic. 3019 would be the last R179 to be sent out after the rest, where the prototype will do testing and then eventually the rest will start coming in.

New features include: A new and improved FIND system, a new and improved passenger information system, as well as TOD. As for propulsion, I still do not know what they used yet.

And a big news for riders: They brake better then the R32's lol.

Do you know what would be improved with the FIND? Could I meet up with you and use your boat to watch the R179s go across the George Washington Bridge?

Oh and here's another thing:

The LED display inside the car where it displays the route information has shifted upward a little, so it's not in the middle like on the R160.

All I can say about the FIND is that it's less prone to glitches and burnt out displays. There's also a new feature that I'll keep quiet about for a later time.

I am just guessing, but are they more flexible? I hope that they could be compatible with Wi-Fi to be changed on the fly. I hope that a later time is soon, as now I just want to see the new cars.

Aren't the R160s already connected to WiFi or some sort of clock?

I was on an E yesterday that listed the (Z) as a transfer. As soon as the clock struck ten, the (Z) disappeared off the FIND.
