R179 Discussion Thread

Bomb hasnt gotten a bid since the 142s. Im glad they got this one.

As far as the 211s, the Board talked about them briefly during the 2/27 meeting. When the 143s came in, we saw the 21st century subway car---standardized. 143s, 160s, 179s and yes, the 211s will all pretty much look the same. Some of the tech specs will be updated of course, but the look of them will all pretty much be the same.

For those of you that haven't heard MITRAC.

They sound a lot like the R142's, but are much sharper and louder. They would be music to any railfan's ears. It would especially give the NYC Subway a special kick. If the R179's have this propulsion a distinction between the new tech trains would be clear.

Based off of what Iv'e gathered, according to non-railfanners it sounds more "high-tech". Having said that, it should go on the "Tourist" line A.K.A. The Broadway Line.

As far as the exterior look, as much as there are those that like variety, the crews, techs, rci's, maintenance, etc, will have an easier, streamlined, (and for the accounting dept.) less expensive time with any new car coming out between 2000 and let's say, 2030.Remember fellow railfans, the mta is in the public transit move the masses at best for less business. Not the let's make gem look pretty business. We'll leave that for the auto industry.

There are some ordered for the Q line. It will be needed for it's future runs on the Second Avenue Line.

The MBTA and SEPTA still paint their subway and trolley cars. Neither of those transit authorities have gone belly-up yet. And both are facing major funding issues in their respective states. The MTA won't die if it paints at least the fronts of its NTT fleets different colors. Hell, it didn't kill them to paint the area around the head and tail lights red on the R142/142A fleet.

thats actually vinyl. Not paint. And yes, the MTA is pretty much that cheap even back to when the 142s were being designed. Everything down to each nut, bolt and screw is accounted for in the cost. How do I know? Asked the engineers themselves when I was an intern years ago.

SEPTA has their own budget issues and are currently removing most of the orange on their broad St cars for easier and cheaper maintenance.

See, they don't need different colors for the front because it so happens that in the MTA, we use Bullets.

Except that the front LED route sign on the R142/143/160 (and most likely the R179s) is always the same reddish-orange color, regardless of route. Now if the NTT cars used front rollsigns like the R42/46/62/68 cars, that would certainly be true.

Painting subway cars are more difficult in NYC than in Philadelphia. We have a lot of people out there that would spray paint and draw on trains. Painting them would require constant new paint coating frequently, and it's not worth it. It's cheaper right now to use the anti graffiti spray and to wipe it off. Painting them would require taking them out of service as well if the vandalism is bad enough. Here we just wipe it off. The train then can go back into service.

Since the 90s, both companies have been using vinyl. Not paint. Both cost $$$ either way.

after the 142s the MTA opted to no longer for the time being use even vinyl for any color liveries on revenue cars except for ads which are paid for.

Lhota does not say that the decision has not been made, he states that he is not sure a final decision has been made.

While such may not have been formally decided, There are a limited number of lines you can run 200+ cars arranged in 8 car trains. That pretty much means they'll be on the C and in the Eastern Division. Considering how few 5 car sets there will be, I don't see how it would make any sense to assign them to their own yard, so I can't see them ending up anywhere but the A. (Unless they were to transfer the M to Jamaica, in which case I could see the R179 5 car sets ending up on the E/F/R, but I have no reason believe that is under consideration. )

There were originally going to be 290 cars: 40 in 4-car sets to replace the R42s at ENY and 250 in 5-car sets to replace the R32s. The number changed to 300 in an unspecified configuration, and you would think that just means two more 5-car sets for one more 10-car train. That seemed to make the most sense. However, many people seem to know that the configuration will be 260 4-car and 40 5-car even though 8 goes into 260 32.5 times That's 65 4-car sets which leaves a half train. Not impossible but quirky, maybe.
