What's so different between the four- and five-car sets that is prevent the latter of which from running?

I believe it has to do with the level of software modifications on each set. The 8 cars being delivered are coming from the factory with the new spec, while the pilots still have the old one. I believe that 3070-3086 may also have the old spec and thats why 3087-3101 is here instead.

Well, because of a power outage on 8th ave (no suprise there, Murphy's law was in full swing today on the subway), I was forced to ride the (J)(Z) and just so happened to catch an R179 (Z) "local" train, car 3066.

My impressions...

  • Definitely have a "new" shiny look on the exterior. Interior is very bright and blue-ish
  • The FIND is indeed quite different
  • Something about the doors seemed much different than the R143s/R160s, can't quite describe it
  • As some have mentioned, a lot of the fixtures (i.e. the speaker grilles, handle bars, door indicator lights, etc.) look a bit bulky/not streamlined into the design
  • Having original R142 chimes is a nice addition
  • Propulsion sound is heavenly compared to the screeching, headache-triggering Alstom R160s (though not quite as good as Siemens R160, but that's IMO)
  • Overall a very smooth ride. I was able to stand without touching/holding onto anything and never lost balance.

One last thought: I passed by an R42 at Canal St on the opposite platform. Not to go on another opinionated tirade, but the contrast between the R42 and R179 couldn't be greater. In my eyes, that thing is a loud, filthy, screeching, vandalized prehistoric beast. Yes, some like the urban grit because it faintly reminds them of the "bad old days" of the subway in the 70s/80s. But it just makes the system look all the more pathetic (perhaps it is fitting).

Deliveries to resume this week.

That's awesome news!! I'm assuming that it's more 8 car r179's that are being delivered.

Fingers crossed that things will finally work out with the r179's.

Thanks for sharing the news.

How come 3070-3086 have the original spec if 3058-3069 are in service?  I'm just wondering, it wouldn't surprise me given how far out of number order the deliveries have been.

3010-3014 is actually at ENY yard. 3015-3019 are the ones with Bombardier I believe.

Lots of work is being done with 3010-3014, which includes fixing/replacing the side LCDs

3010 and 3011, from the video above, are missing them.  What's wrong with them?  Is it a software issue or hardware issue?  The signs look basically the same as the R160 signs but with a longer line of text.

Is there a possibility that the R179 problems are going to be all fixed and perform just as good as the R160s? What problems are keeping the R179s from entering service? I remember riding on a R179 on the (J) on Thursday December 14th, 2017 at 10:29AM from Fulton St to Broad St (the last stop). I didn't see any problems at all. When should I expect the 5-car sets to enter service?

---UPDATE---

Sets in service:

3058-3065

3066-3069 & 3090-3093

3086-3089 & 3094-3097

3098-3101 & 3082-3085

Sets delivered but still testing:

3010-3019

3050-3057

3078-3081

3110-3113

Potential deliveries:

3020-3029

3102-3109

3114-3117

I don't know the other 5-car numbers, besides 3010-3049, obviously. There are 24 5-car sets now instead of 8 originally, but I'm guessing the other 5-car sets will utilize the higher/greater numbers that were supposed to be used for the 4-car sets.

3010-3019, some cars of that set were sent back to Bombadier. I don't remember which cars were sent but I know that there's an incomplete 10 Car set of cars laying around 207th.

When did 3110-3113 arrived?
