A couple of sightings of the R179 (A) train last week till until now,

* Last week, on a Friday night around 9:30 PM, the (A) at 207 St arrived first was the R32 set for Far Rockaway and the train next was the R179. Few minutes before departure, trains were swapped in terminals so, the R179 that has the Lefferts Blvd arrow on the clock was the first train to leave instead as the R32 was bound for Lefferts Blvd instead.

*Currently, the (A) set 3238-3247 is Far Rockaway bound with 3 other trains behind after one another as well. All R179s that were on the (A) is to Far Rockaway but back to back between Aqueduct and the Rockaways.

*3010-19 has a silent door closing, no *ding dong during closing

Software issues. They’re getting around to the R179 sets.

I rode an r179 A train uptown. This time it ran faster between 59th Street and 125th street. The r179's are capable of running as fast as the r160's. I guess we just have to give t/o's time for them to get comfortable operating the r179's.

Quick question Is it just me or to the FIND displays on the on the (J) different from the FIND displays on the (A). On the (A) the stations the FIND displays have a faint white dotted lie around each station and I can clearly see 2 dot matrix rows for each station. On the (J) the display is more dark, there not dotted line, and besides the dots that are lit up the rest of the dot matrix is not visible.

The former is something that happens to all R179s. They fade away as they are wiped. The rows is also on all sets.

Ignore.

For now. It's unlikely that the A will get r160's at the present moment. However, things will change once the r211's enter service. There will most likely be major fleet swaps along the B division (with a few exception) 2 to 3 years from now and anything is possible. The A will definitely be 100% NTT'S by 2022-2023. The question is with what.

The (A) won't be 100% NTT's by 2023, They're will still be R46's left. You forgot jamaica is getting half of the base order. The whole goal is to get the R46's out of jamaica first. It's unlikely that Jamaica is becoming all 160's. Even if they were to become 100% R160, they would still loose them when the R211's are delivered.

It would have to be because of 8th Avenue CBTC in 2022. Jamaica would most likely get the 1st option cars and deal with R160s from CI for a period of time.

I doubt cbtc will be online by 2022 on 8th ave. They never reach their goal on time. Their main focus is getting queens done first which will be in 2022.

There is a new 10 car R179 heading southbound on the (A) for a test run. Stopped at 145 and opened the doors on the wrong side at 2:15pm. Couldn’t get a pic since I went by it on a northbound (A) but the last car was 3272 if that tells anyone what set(s) it is.

Jamaica won't be getting R160s anytime soon, more and more R46s are moving into Jamaica from Pitkin.

What will Jamaica Yard do with so many R46 because they only put them on (F) and (R)

Are they swapping some R160 over to Coney Island Yard or something?

Keep in mind that there are only thirteen 10-car 600 feet long R179 trains that will be assigned to the (A). So that's ten full length 600 feet long trains of R46s from Pitkin to Jamaica. It won't be that many R46s thrown to Jamaica from Pitkin. Just only a couple.

If the final plan is to increase the spare factor overall, then more than just two R46 trains will need to be moved. Remember that Concourse Yard is still short some R68s, that need to be returned.

the likely swap in this case would be:

- 64 R46 cars to Jamaica (8 trains)

- 50 R160s to Coney Island (5 trains)

- 12 R68s to Concourse (1.5 trains)

Pitkin will have a net gain of +5 train-sets (helpful for the (A)(C))

Jamaica will have a net gain of +3 train-sets

(helpful for the (E)(F)(R) - +1 train for each route)

Coney Island will have a net gain of +3 train-sets

(+1 for the (Q) for spares and +1 for additional service on the (Q), +1 for the (N) as a spare. The extra 0.5 trainset could be an extra for the (G)).

Concourss will have a net gain of +2 trainsets (to make 6 spare trains for the (D)

It's all about increasing the spare factor systemwide and fixing the shortages that they've been dealing with since the mass retirement of SMEEs in 2010.

There are R179 (A) sets in revenue service.

Also, do any other trains besides the (A)(C)(J)(Z)(R) have R179s?
