T to Dyre Avenue Posted January 24, 2020 Share #8829 Posted January 24, 2020 Glad to see and hear they’re coming back into service. And sooner than I thought. For all the problems the R179s have had, we really do need them. Here’s hoping that they don’t have any more mechanical problems that force them out of service.

Not necessarily; back in 2007-10 the TA scrapped retired SMEEs as fast as they could before they realized it was the R44s that needed to go. That mentality reduced the spare factor- ten years later and we're still dealing with the fallout of that.

Retired cars should be stored as emergency fleet for at least 2 years before being scrapped. What happened with the r179's is very similar to what happened with the r46's, r68's, r142's during the first few months/years of service. The only difference was that the redbirds weren't brought back to service after retirement when the r142's were having issues, but in the case of the other fleets that I mentioned, yes.

That would be crazy and plus production for the 211’s is not until another year at the least. Prototype schedule during the summer. Let’s see how Kawasaki does on expedite production without flaws and mistakes.

Probably 2022/23 once the main order is done.

The plan for the r179's was to replace all r42's and some r32's and I think the MTA is going to stick with the plan.
Coney Island Av Posted January 25, 2020 Share #8843 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) even in the worst case scenario, the 179s will only be able to retire some R32s (probably 50-80 cars) and all of the remaining R42s. at least the majority of the R32s are definitely staying for at least another 2-3 years until the first production sets of R211s come in. theres simply not enough cars to retire ALL of them considering that we dont even have the first 211 in property. ideally, i can see the TA getting rid of a couple R32 sets for parts to keep the other cars running, given that about ten cars are currently stripped & OOS. the fate of the 42s is currently unknown at this moment since no one has confirmed their retirement (for good this time). and yes, while the MTA were successful in retiring the RTS last year in May (for those that followed the bus section of the forums), at least they had a surplus of new buses (XD40 & LFS) to do it, and there wasn't even a severe shortage of buses in that situation. this situation however is different cause the R179s were only able to offset the retirement of the R44s, meaning that there wasn't a gain in the amount of cars compared to pre-2010 levels.
