R179 Discussion Thread

The problem isn't the 160s. Those are fine. The problem lies with the rapid deterioration of the 44s. Had those cars not fallen apart like they did, we wouldn't have this problem.

As for whether the MTA had any more available options for the 160 order, the 179 order is basically the third order of 160s, just under a different contract number.

This is so ridiculous.  Weren't they talking about this fleet since at least 2007?  How is it that the R-188s are being built before the R-179s?

The 188 order is coming before the 179 is because it's a simpler order. Most of the order calls for converting older cars already built. The numerous delays in the 179 car order stemmed from lack of funds. That's why the order switched from 290 cars (250 five-car sets, 40 four-car sets) with options for 50 and 80 cars each to what it is now, 300 cars (260 four-car sets, 40 five-car sets).

Not for a LONG time.....

The test train should be on site sometime next year.

Like I said before, consider the 179s the third option order for the 160s, just under a different R number. It really makes no difference as they will be similar cars to the 160s.

If they were similar, the MTA should of just excised the option back in 2010-2011 as R160Cs or something. What, they ran out of funds or something?

I think someone saw this page and without any context, ran with it. When that retirement plan was thrown around in '81, it wasn't expected that the trains would last much past 35 years, and given the state of the subways in the early '80s, those were probably best-case scenario ideas.

It was terrible back then so it makes sense......
