MysteriousBtrain Posted February 12, 2015 Share #1676 Posted February 12, 2015 Does anybody know which line will the R179 (10-Car) be tested on first ?Not for a while. We are not even 100% sure when the first R179 will even start service. It was scheduled for delivery October 2014, but when the NYCTA's and Bombardier's inspectors found cracks due to welding issues in the prototype train's chassis, the entire lot was rejected, and the delivery schedule was pushed back by approximately 6 to 11 months(as noted on Wikipedia).
Javier Posted February 12, 2015 Share #1677 Posted February 12, 2015 Are there any videos or pictures of the R179 subway car? Or was the prototype never even been tested?
MysteriousBtrain Posted February 12, 2015 Share #1678 Posted February 12, 2015 Are there any videos or pictures of the R179 subway car? Or was the prototype never even been tested? As I said before, the prototype had too many cracks,so the R179s got delayed in delivery and the first cars are not expected until mid-spring the earliest.
MTA Dude Posted February 13, 2015 Share #1679 Posted February 13, 2015 Does it look exactly like the R160?
Sparen of Iria Posted February 13, 2015 Share #1680 Posted February 13, 2015 Does it look exactly like the R160? It will most likely look very similar to a R160 (hence the 'R160C' nickname some people give it). Currently, all we have are renders.
LTA1992 Posted February 13, 2015 Share #1681 Posted February 13, 2015 Well, from the mock up and renders it will look similar, but different enough to have its own identity. But I have the eyes of an artist...

But I have the eyes of an artist... I really hope that they have some kind of distinguishing feature that will make them look different from an R160 even if they are functionally similar.
Q113 LTD Posted February 15, 2015 Share #1683 Posted February 15, 2015 It would be nice if they display subway line status on the small tv screen on R179 & R160 so that passengers can know if their subway is delay or not. Just like the tv screen display at subway entrances.
LTA1992 Posted February 15, 2015 Share #1684 Posted February 15, 2015 Wouldn't that require some type of on-board wifi?
MysteriousBtrain Posted February 15, 2015 Share #1685 Posted February 15, 2015 Wouldn't that require some type of on-board wifi? It could work. Buses have their own wifi so drivers could connect to other B/Os and their depots. Trains could be able to do the same and also hook up the type of service changes in the cars.

That's what I meant. IDK why I thought is was to talk to others.
Grand Concourse Posted February 20, 2015 Share #1688 Posted February 20, 2015 tbh, I don't really care about the front design being that much different from the R143/160s. I just wished it wasn't the all black front again. I think it would've been nicer if there was something that could distinguish between the Alstom and Kawasaki sets from a distance like one being red and the other blue like the MNCR trains. imo.
Transitfan007 Posted February 22, 2015 Share #1689 Posted February 22, 2015 (edited) IMO the Red L.E.Ds on the front should be in color according to the line its running on; for example imagine in L.E.D lights or even LCD Edited February 22, 2015 by Transitfan007

I don't think it would look particularly great. Multicolored LEDs is possible but may not be worth the investment. You would be stuck with Red, Green, Blue, and Orange, most likely.

Eric B Posted February 22, 2015 Share #1693 Posted February 22, 2015 They've finally made the move to RGB on the newest buses (but this, I heard was because that was the only sign being offered by the vendor now?) though they are keeping them set on amber for the time being. PATH also has the RGB in front. The question is whether the vendor of the MTA's special signs (with the circle and diamond outlines around the text character) has RGB available. (I've suggested the letter should be white LED only, and only the circle/diamond be color changing, which would improve cost).

Test units are suppose to arrive later on this year and we might not see the actual delivery until later next year. You have plenty of time to catch those good old R32's.
LTA1992 Posted April 13, 2015 Share #1698 Posted April 13, 2015 It just occurred to me how truly small this order is lol. If all goes to schedule, the entire order can be delivered in less than a year. Since it's usually one train delivered per week. Historically anyway.
Sparen of Iria Posted April 13, 2015 Share #1699 Posted April 13, 2015 ...who knows how long it will take for them to start delivering. Honestly, I really don't care as long as the R32s and R42s can hold up until the delivery. Especially the 42s, which are basically wrecks at this point imo.
