Nova RTS 9147 Posted April 21, 2011 Share #27 Posted April 21, 2011 amtrak is efficient??? and reliable??? does it do better as private?? Will privatizing mta subways and railroads work??? why or why not?? Its actually improved greatly over the past years. The reason it kept floundering was because everyone and their mama in Washington DC kept trying to kill it and underfund it. And no it wont. Financially the MTA is in a deep hole, even though the agency as a whole seems to slowly be doing better. No, but a more hands off, albany miding it's own dam business, approach would be nice. the MTA is functionaly no diffrent than any other corporation, primany exception being it reports to the state. If politition stop sticking thier noses into the system, it would function a heck of alot better. The lack of funding also doesn't help (Ironically its Albany's fault the TA is in so much financial trouble).
engineerboy6561 Posted April 27, 2011 Share #28 Posted April 27, 2011 From what i can tell, is neither fish nor fowl and seems to enjoy trying to play both sides. It's not so much a public agency as it is a "too big to fail" almost-corporation that has its own key to the cookie jar. As to privatizing the system, I can see a great deal of opportunity but also a number of pitfalls. If you try to simply privatize it as a whole in its current state I can see the whole thing falling off a cliff. That said, what might work would be creation of a "MetroZone" inside the area covered by , the Bee-Line, and LIB. Within this zone, subway and commuter rail would be retained as a subdivision of NYSDOT, and then local and express bus lines would be left to private operators, but all operators would use a MetroCard (or its smartcard successor) to handle fares. Fares and operations would not necessarily be standardized, but NYCDOT would have the right to set fare ceilings, maintenance standards, etc. and monitor for compliance. Within the MetroZone, we might want to try IBOAs running differing services; for instance the Gun Hill Depot might be handed over to a Pelham IBOA providing service in and around Throgs Neck, Co-op City, the Pelhams, parts of Bruckner Blvd, etc. as well as express service from these areas to Manhattan. Longer lines such as Bx12SBS that pass through multiple jurisdictions could be handled by partnerships/agreements between services, and fleet purchases could be coordinated across IBOAs to allow orders in bulk and cut per-bus costs. Alternatively, we could just bring under state control a la (NJT); that model seems to serve them pretty well.
