4P3607 Posted March 6, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 6, 2011 Wait... How can 137 Street be a terminal if you can't transfer to the other side? I thought in order for a station to be a terminal It must have a free transfer to the other platform...
PATCOman Posted March 6, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 6, 2011 137 Street has been a terminal before. There are trains every day which begin/end at 137 Street. Plus there is a crew room there.

Absolutely. For years, the 1 used to "short turn" there a lot on weekdays.

Brighton Local Posted March 6, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 6, 2011 If some of you have maps from the late 70s and 80s, it clearly states in the Service Guide Box under rush hours, 137 St & South Ferry, Manhattan.
Mysterious2train Posted March 6, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 6, 2011 Wait, so there's service between 137th St and 168th St? What a waste.
4P3607 Posted March 6, 2011 Share #8 Posted March 6, 2011 Wait, so there's service between 137th St and 168th St? What a waste. I know. Its better to run shuttle buses that length. Also what track will the downtown train terminate on at 137 Street? Will it terminate on the downtown track, then go back up, switch to the middle track, then go back down switching to the Northbound track?
MikeGerald Posted March 6, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 6, 2011 The track map of 137th Street (available on NYCSubway.Org) shows that there are track switches allowing trains to cross over all of the three tracks that make up the main line tracks of the #1 line line. The storage tracks of the storage area north of 137th Street, are aligned along the sides of the tunnel. So basically a downtown train from 145th Street can enter the 137th Street station on the downtown track, and reverse direction leaving the platform, then switch to the middle track, ride that north and then switch again to the uptown track at 145th street just by crossing over the switches. The train does not HAVE to leave the station, head toward the outside trestle near 133rd Street, and then return to the station - it could, but it does not have to. In fact on opening day of the IRT, October 4, 1904, the last stop was 145th Street, which would function on the uptown platfrom as an exit only station. The 145th Street-Lenox Avenue station, the uptown side is exit only, (opening on November 4, 1904) since trains coming in on that side were headed toward the train yard. The rest of the Broadway line above 145th Street opened in stages, as the line was completed. For decades, the 137th Street station was the terminal for some #1 trains. In the days before there were train numbers (1950's and before) - westside local service to and from South Ferry was provided full-time by local trains from 137th street, and from 145th Street. Trains from 242nd Street-Van Cortlandt, and from the Bronx (West 180th Street-Bronx Park or East 180th Street, 241st-WPR) were the Seventh AVenue EXPRESS trains to either New Lots AVenue or Flatbush Avenue. So no, not all terminals have a direct connection to the out-bound platform for passengers. Even to this day there's no way to enter the 145th Street station to ride to the terminal at 148th Street-Lenox Terminal. There are a couple of other stations like this also. Mainly because the transit folk never thought there would be reason to go from the second to the last stop, to the last stop - to build a token booth area. While many stations have mezzanines or central platforms for their terminals, that was not the case for a few of the early terminals. Mike
PATCOman Posted March 7, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 7, 2011 It will probably relay south of 137 Street to alleviate overcrowding.

I think there maybe just one shuttle service running on one track, just like the Chambers to Broad G/o thats happening as well.

Im not sure, there would probably be more than 2 trains running. But then again, who knows. They are also single-tracking with the shuttle between Bedford Av & Union Square.
