5898 has the sickest sounding horn I've heard yet. Pretty distinctive from the usual R46 horns I've came across. Speaking of horns, the 68s/68As seems to have the most horrible sounding horns.

Personally speaking, it's the R32's that has the worst horns in my opinion. It doesnt have the low pitched sound that demands attention as say with the NTTs, R46's or the R68's. The sounds of the horns between the R32 and the others are like comparing a Volkswagon Beetle to a Cadillac.

I have my own sources independant of other transit sites.

A list:

The Joe Corner: http://www.thejoekorner.com/photos/

Second Ave Sagas: http://secondavenuesagas.com/

Abandoned stations: http://www.columbia.edu/~brennan/abandoned/

nycsubway.org: http://nycsubway.org/wiki/Main_Page

Federal Transit Administration: http://www.fta.dot.gov/

Gothamist: http://gothamist.com/

MTA CCC Dashboard: http://mta.info/capitaldashboard/10_14/CapitalDashBoard7.html

NY Times: Example: http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch/#/mta

There are tons of resources out there.

*Very importantly the transit workers in surface transit and RTO themselves here on this site with the insight and insider info along with the busfanners and railfanners that keep track of the rolling stock assignments down to car/fleet type and roster numbers. Very helpful.

Thats how I roll in deep transit related discussion, plus along with personal experiences as a straphanger using the subway daily almost.

I know most of the websites you mentioned and by the way its Joe Kornor not Cornor

Thanks for the clarification. By the way, it's Corner not cornor. Look it up in the dictionary if you you are not convinced.

I think he was just trying to point out his name is Joe Korman, so he spells it using first part of his last name: The Joe Kor-nor.

I think I realize that what I posted had a typo. People make mistakes, I am not a walking Microsoft Word with autocorrect. This is not English 101. T took the college course already and got an A. I've paid my dues.

(I am just using your post as the sounding board, not directing my intense response at you personally.)

I realize that the name of the webpage was a play on words, that is nothing short of obvious (Korman = Korner). I visit that site very often usually to review photography rules of different transit systems. What should have been said is that simply that the said person is aware of the site and nothing more. That is what I would have done instead of the condescending remark over petty grammatical mistakes in my post which was initially a response to Obito, NOT Union Tpke, with the word 'corner' spelled wrong in the process which is contradictory to the initial response, in question, to begin with.

Like Essex?Totally agree with you...

Yeah, and like Chambers. Speaking of Essex, i got off there today to do some picture taking on the Lower East Side and Marcy Avenue over the Williamsburg Bridge(which I walked. Pictures to come) and I finally found out what all that open space on the Jamaica-bound tracks was for.

Preliminary structural repair work for a pending Essex Street overhaul is in the works. Nothing though on the Bowery at the moment. Probably because it is low priority due to low ridership but that's just my take on it.

Essex Street? Yes you know the deal, that was a former trolly terminal. Here's some background info as you railfan the station (I need to do this myself one day and get pics now that I think about it since I only posted pics of certain stations on the loop and Jamaica El over the summer). Also the spurs on the Brooklyn side of the bridge was moved and rebuilt prior to Nassau Street Loop construction and rebuilt Jamaica Elevated construction as part of the Dual Contracts to accomidate steel cars which accounts for the empty space @ Essex and also on the Brooklyn side of the Willy B before Marcy Avenue in its odd layouts.

lol I know exactly what you're talking about. I've yet to come across a 32 without the high-pitch tone to it. Thou I actually love the R32 horns. Along with the NTTs, they're my favorite. I love how it starts off so high-pitch then ends low-pitch.

On another note, I love when going through a fast area (40mph plus), the T/O spots a flag, starts blasting the horn and putting the train in full service.

Question. Let's say I live by Ralph btwn MacDonough (Correct me if that's spelled wrong) and Broadway. How long would it take to get to the Queens Center Mall from there if I took the (C) to the (E) to (M) or (R)?

You have 4 options:(I assume you're walking to the Ralph Avenue station)

(C) to Broadway Junction, (J) to Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK Airport, (E) to Forest Hills-71st Avenue,  (M) to Woodhaven Blvd, walk east to Queens Blvd and then east to Queens Center. 52 minutes travel time.

(C) to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets, (G) to Court Square, (M) to Woodhaven Blvd. Same walking directions as above. 1 hour 1 minute travel time.

(C) to 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal, (R) to Woodhaven Blvd. Same walking directions. 1 hour 13 minutes travel time.

(C) to Jay Street-MetroTech, (F) to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue, (M) to Woodhaven Blvd. Same walking directions. 1 hour 1 minute travel time.

Directions courtesy of Google Maps.

Ok thanks. I'm surprised it doesn't suggest the (C) to 50th street, then the (E) to Roosevelt for the (M) or (R)

Yes indeed. It seems that was the case with the SMEE's which changed with the space age tech R44 and onward, to the new SMEE's (R62/68's) and the NTT's (R142/143/160/188 - I have a video on it, the horn on the R188 is the same as the R142).

You should see the Low-V's, the horn sounds like whistles, it's wierd. Fast cars indeed but the horn is something else, sounds like a steam locomotive horn.

The CTA 2400/2600/3200/5000 series horns sound like that:http://www.chicago-l.org/multimedia/sounds/classic/3200horn.wav

Another scrap update:

Another pair of R33WF cars left from 207 to scrap yesterday. Car numbers unknown.

Next up on the scrap line: R30 cars 8424-25, the Coney Island School Cars. The pair didn't seem to have been stripped of anything at all, still have the doors covered in plywood.

R27/30 Pitkin pair still hooked to the Arnines. For now.

I hope they save that R27, it will run good with 8506 due to it not being rebuilt, I rather see that than that shit called the R44 in the museum
