BUS - Random Thoughts Thread

It's sad how the last remaining D60HFs from Gun Hill, West Farms, and Tuskegee Airmen were all sent to scrap just this week. What's really crazy is that they all got scrapped only a day after their last run.

I really hope that today won't be the last for the D60HFs. In fact, they're my third-favorite bus, only being beaten by the Orion Vs and RTS in my opinion. If the D60s are still around by next week, I'm definitely gonna get one last ride on it as a somber farewell to arguably one of the best articulated buses in the city... :(

According to the scrap thread today is the last day for the D60s.

Those are my top three buses as well. When I started fanning in the mid to late 2000s those buses had a heavy presence in the city,  DD50 was the dominant engine of the local fleet, good ol days.

Appreciate the clarification. I was always under the impression that those SBS44’s turn to SBS46 once they complete at WBP with a XD40. So my guess is that the XD40’s do return back as SBS44’s and not an interline for the 46.

No problem...Basically those bus spotted on the sb44+ were due to bus shortage at the time the operator needed to pull out of the depot to start service. You will also see on Saturdays the SB46+ bus is being used on the B41 for a short trip from Kingsplaza to Empire BLVD as an extra service needed due to short services of the B41 returning to KP.

Are they just scrapping these D60s because of politics or because they're breaking down to the point of too expensive / not worth the fix?

I always thought D60d were well maintained buses...They're also 4-5 years younger than some of the RTS getting retired.

Some of these D60s can't go to the storage fleet?

Yea the numbers dwindled really fast and I wouldn't be surprised if it had to do with politics like what happened with the RTS in Brklyn. Usually, the fleet numbers stick around till like 1 or 2. Not the whole fleet gone unless they found a major mechanical problem with them.  There are still a few around at KB tho. 127 runs pretty good still. GH already sending LFSA's to KB to help with the retirement.

Was on a OG Hybrid today that suddenly couldn't move, bus was going really slow until it came to a stop. bus would move a couple of inches but it really couldn't get going, driver shut the bus off, restarted and the bus was fine after that. Wonder what the issue was.

A while back I was on a bus which was also an OG Hybrid, driver couldn't move the bus cause of something to do with compression, IIRC it was low and had to build up again. Eventually the bus got moving again.

Today I managed to get on an unusual S74 trip. Today I had to get to Rossville Ave so I took the SIM4C to Aen Ave to transfer to the S74. I missed one that was left around 10 minutes ago and the next one was 16 minutes away. I decided to walk the 15 minutes to Rossville Ave, however, while I was walking, A Yukon bus (4245) that was parked at the ETC when I passed there on the SIM4C passed by. I managed to get on it and took it a few stops to Rossville Ave. There was no gap in Bricktown Bound buses so I don't know why this short trip from the ETC to Bricktown happened.

I get that all good things must come to an eventual end, but at the same time, it's still saddening that it's gotten down to counting how many RTS' are still chugging along :(

You know, the only thing the MTA was correct about the RTS was ENY losing it's remaining RTS by the end of the month.

However, there's a catch. They only retired about 3-6 RTS out of Flatbush instead of a dozen like they promised by the end of March (which is today). So they lied on that note. In fact, there were several RTS out on the B41, B44, and B46 this weekend, which should signify that they have a lot more life in them.

Word.

You know you're getting old when the (sports) players you grew up watching becoming coaches now & when the public transportation fleet (bus or train) you grew up riding as a kid ending up being reefed, or otherwise permanently OOS...

Do you really think some random resident or politician has the time to go to a depot and count EVERY old bus down there? Of course something like this was bound to happen and honestly it's not that big a deal. The only thing people care about is if the RTS are gone by May 10th.

However, in the situation of Flatbush there aren’t any replacements. They are down to 42 RTS. If FB scraps all of their buses in the likely hood very soon. They have no choice to get NG’s from Grand Avenue or from Yukon.

Anyone know why this site doesn't seem to update it's roster as quickly?

http://ttmg.org/transitwiki/Insider's_Guide:_Metropolitan_Transportation_Authority_Bus_Operations_-_Depot_Summary

Sometimes it can be neglected for more than a month.

Not everyone has time 24/7 to update these things...give it time.

Patience is the key.. can't be updated every second and you'll see changes all over.

Also, not a April Fools joke but the high floor articulated fleet are OOS at KB.

Considering that I'm rebuilding 1851 pages on the MAIN site of ttmg.org, Watermarking nearly 25,000 photos all while working a full time job and taking care of two buses... I'd say relax and wait a sec.

My bad bro, didn't know how hard it is to run a site like that. For some reason I thought anyone can edit it like Wikipedia.

Not even close, when I do update the bus roster it takes me almost 2 hours. Because I go through each Depot double checking stuff that's retired, various movements, double and triple checking various information aside from physically typing out the wiki.
