BUS - Random Thoughts Thread

Recommended Posts

Right now, in the middle of the PM Rush there's only ONE RTS in service on the B41, so weird to see considering they have been a major part of the B41 fleet since the 80s... before I was even born.

Looks like 5125 is the last FLA RTS I will ride which happened on the B46 a couple days ago, bus ran hard. I remember the last RTS rides I had at my favorite depots..

FLA - 5125

UP - 5092

ENY - 4925

Ulmer is clinging onto it's nine remaining RTS, Quill still has 19 RTS, and FB has 13 RTS, so altogether, there's still 41 in active service.

Overall, I've caught the RTS out of these depots:

ENY

Flatbush

Fresh Pond

Grand Av

Jamaica

LGA

Quill

Ulmer Park

I remember the good old days of taking the RTS out of Manhattanville and 126th St depot (this was back in 2009)

With the headways on the B44-SBS, the total of 22-24 buses of its spare factor is slightly decreasing. Previously, there's about 36-40 but currently on 30-33.

They’re trying to kill service just to give it to the M14 and it’s quite sad. That means more buses are going to be subjected to over crowding and people are going to stop taking it. I wish I could call a community rep because this is just outrageous.

Save for the holding the seat bit, I see #1 play out so many times with older riders on the B12, B35, and B46, it's not even funny.... They have this weird smile on their faces, as if to say, *I deeeeeeed it, I deeeeeeds it, this how you get over on these muthumf**kuz" - and expect you to give up a seat on the strength of some, respect your elders.... FOH.. You don't automatically get respect out of me, solely because you're past your prime....

I guess that answers your question... I find #1 more infuriating (that isn't to excuse the brazen lil bastard in situation #2 in the slightest).....

I saw a group of tourists pull that shit on the (C) train. One of their number had gotten up to look at the map and someone else tried to sit in that seat and they really said with a straight face "Oh no that's my friend's seat" while leaning over and covering it with their hands

The SBS44 will be back to normal when Falls returns back. Its always like that as Summer time is about to hit, they reduce services by cutting a certain run.

Yeah but they literally are sending artics from FB to quill and wf in droves.

They seem to be on the Bx10 in the morning here in Riverdale here and there.  I saw one this morning in fact while walking to the express bus.

I forgot to put Staten Island into the last question but thanks anyway I'll be on the lookout.

You could just camp out at the ferry terminal until one shows up. Pre bustime era this is what I would do to find an rare SI bus.

The Queens Equivalent would be standing by Merrick in Jamaica. All the 1996 RTS from JFK would stop at the term.

My greatest achievement busfanning was catching Bus 9302 on the Q104 out of nowhere. It was so cool because that bus didn't have GPS on it. So I was literally at the best place at the right time. I am all for untrackable bus fanning. It's not fun when you already know where it is. Where's the fun in that? But when you find something spontaneously, Its special.

1000x, this.

You may not be Jerry Springer, but AFAIC, this is a good final thought yes.gif

I have a hunch that this is one (of many) reasons you don't nearly see as many pic posts/posters on here.... The vying for who could post the first/EXCLUSIVE whatever on here, used to be comical at times... But more importantly, I'm quite sure that/those particular catches at the time meant something more to the photographer.....

Which bus lines are or have been your home routes?

For me:

Staten Island: S40, S42, S44, S52, S74, S76, S78

Brooklyn: B13, B26, B43, B44, B52, Q24, Q56

And now that I just moved to NJ: 13 and 27

On the subject of getting rare catches without using Bustime, I can recall the following:

-Catching an MCI or Prevost on the S89 before it became common

-Riding an RTS on the S62 (the summer of 2013 when SI was really short) and on the S78 back when YU had RTSes

There’s probably more that I can’t remember at the moment.

Home routes:

Bx19, M3, M10

Rare bus catches for me:

RTS:

-9307 on the Q69, Q72, and Q101 (in November-December 2018, so rare as only 9307 and 9348 were remaining back then)

-5204 on the B26 (rare even before the RTS started retiring)

D60HF:

-114 (ex-5559) on the M14A (in January 2019, way after Quill lost its D60HF)

-1098 (a 1996-1998 D60) on the M15 back in 2009, the only pre-2002 D60HF I caught since I didn't really do a lot of busfanning back in the day

Orion VII:

-7819 on the Bx19 (only happened due to snow loans, January 2019)

-6415 on the M1 and M7 (same reason above)

Didn't catch a lot of rare stuff since I only got into busfanning seriously last year.

For me it's the q104, q32, q60. The q66, q18, and b24 are technically nearby too but I never use them

Home routes when I lived in Flatbush: B6, B11, B41, B44, B49, B68, B103, Q35, BM1 - 4.

Home routes today: B6, B17, B42, B82, B60, B103 and BM2.

As for rarest catch: Catching an Orion V on the Q35 when it was still Green Lines, catching a Orion V on the Q35 a couple of years after the takeover.

RTS on the B8 in 2012

Hybrid on the B103 in the C40LF era

Prevost demo bus at CAS depot

NG on the B41 when FLA first got those buses in 08

Matter of fact I caught NGs at many depots when they first got them, not really excited about that as I preferred the buses the NGs replaced and still do (Except for the 400 & 500 Orion V, those were pure garbage)

Catching Orion V CNG 581 - 610 at JG, they was kinda rare as they there was only 30 of them at Gleason, also they predate the bustime era.

Catching the first 2200 MCI SC got on its first day of service.

S44/94, S46/96, S53, S57, S59, S66, SIM3/3C, SIM35 (The S40/90 are nearby but it's a bit of a walk from my house.)

Rare Catches:

- Provost on the S57 (It was a school tripper during a snowstorm but the S57 never uses express buses on its trippers so this was a catch.)

- 7087 on the S59 (This happened yesterday when I was transferring to the S59 and since the S59 is a Yukon route, they barely have 3G's on the line, this was a filler from Castleton.)

- NG's on the S78 when it's not a tripper.

My rarest catch was that of a Green Line Orion V. I was starting to busfan, right at the tail end of 2011, and one of them pulled into 165th Street terminal. At the time, I didn't know how rare those were, so I only took a video and that was that. Only 1 video of a Green Line, and no photos.

I'd say catching O5 CNG 8571 on the N6 was my second-rarest catch, followed by 740 on the Q52.

My rarest catches:

-1996 RTS 9307 on the Q69, Q72, Q101 (when there were only two-three 1996s left, they mostly ran on the Q102 shuttle)

-1998-1999 RTS 5204 on the B26

-2002-2003 D60HF 114 on the M14A (after Quill lost its D60s)

-2003-2004 Orion VII CNG 7819 on the Bx19 (snow loan)

-2002-04 Orion VII Hybrid 6415 on the M1 and M7 (green-signed)

-2002-04, 2006-07 Orion VII Hybrids on the Bx8, Bx11 and Bx35 (green-signed, plus the orange-signed 2006s)

-2001 MCI D4500 2209 on the QM31 (rare now since there are just two 2001s left in the city)

-2002 MCI D4500 2848 on the BM3 (recently when BP loaned 2848 to SC)

-2017-2018 Alexander Dennis SuperLo 0022 and MCI CRT LE 0023 demos (caught both on the X17J)

I know most, or all of these catches weren't rare back in the day, but to me they're rare since I only started busfanning recently (mid-2018).
