BUS - Random Thoughts Thread

Recommended Posts

If he was scheduled for 3:35, doesn't that mean he's late? As for being a Midtown/Downtown run, maybe there was a Downtown run that they couldn't fill, so they had the Midtown driver cover it. (So I guess people along Church Street were SOL if that was the case)

There was also a time when it operated via the FDR (It would be AM via NJ, PM via 23rd & FDR)

On a side note, I went up to CCNY yesterday. I think this was my first time walking through Harlem. (I went to a college fair there before, but they had a bus for us). The trip wasn't as long as I expected. I think we left around 8:15PM, and got home around 9:45PM. (We took a shuttle bus to the (D) to the (Q) to the (6) to the (4) to the X17C, because my mom didn't want to take the (1) and make it easier) It's kind of stupid that they have 2 shuttle buses to the (A)(B)(C)(D) (one for 145th, one for 125th), but nothing for the (1) at 137th.

Not really. It's a shorter walk from 137th to CCNY, about 3 minutes or so. On the other hand, it's about 10 minutes from 145th Street.

I don't even know at this point. Like I said, I was expecting a midtown express at 3:35, but was there 5 minutes early and didn't see it. Got a midtown+downtown run after 3:35.

On 7027 on the S53, front right suspension on the bus is gone. At least the bus isn't shuddering like it's sister 4xxx's.

Many of the NG's on the S79-SBS are the same. Narrows Road destroys the front (and rear on one NG last week) suspension on those poor things. There is bump before the Hylan Blvd/Narrows Rd stop going west on the S79-SBS that is almost impossibly bad. It sounds as if the suspension collapses and the front axle gets straight up knocked into the bus when some buses cross that bump.

What is the suspension? Is it possible for you to show me a picture of the suspension/what LRG is talking about?

Eh, but you still have to deal with the hills in the area for those few blocks. (Plus, it's more like 5-6 minutes if you're starting the walk from Convent).

I checked out the site, and I keep getting conflicting information. Some pages say there's still a shuttle to 137th, while others don't.

I assume (depot guys clear this up) they're using Meritor (probably FH946), as that's what other Orion VII models I've seen on Altoona site had listed. Front steer-axle.

Yeah, Orion pretty much uses that

Today was my first day ever seeing an Orion VII with a broken pull cord...on the high section left hand side of 3962 on the S78...i wonder how long it was like that

Probably a while lol, I remember I was on 7046 & the whole left side "cords" were down. Someone took tape & held them back up again.

That's the axle in the front, that's not the only part of the suspension. You still have air bags, shock absorbers, radius rods, and (most likely the reason the suspension is leaning in the front) the leveling valves.

I'm not an expert on car and bus parts. Are the shock absorbers the springs?

It should also be noted the Orion VII uses angled bellows, 2 airbags per axle, somewhat not standard compared to other buses in North America, but very common with buses in other places such as the UK. Most other North American buses use 4 airbags per axle.

OVII's use 2 air bags in on the front axle only. 4 airbags are used on the rear axle...

I'm not aware of who provides those components, though. For ZF, they have details on every bit, with Meritor, all I could find was info on the axle itself. Can I assume the airbags are their own and not provided by a different supplier.

Nope, airbags come from firestone/Goodyear. Radius rods come from the axle manufacture (until they find an aftermarket company to make them cheaper), and the shocks are usually supplied by Koni.

Thanks for the details. Much appreciated.
