Legislation: http://legis.suffolkcountyny.gov/Resos2011/i1134-11.pdf

Sunday bus service is officially heading to the East End, as County Executive Steve Levy on Thursday signed into law a bill to provide Sunday bus service on two East End bus lines, and to increase the fare by 50 cents on those two lines to pay for it.

The county Legislature approved the measure by a 16-1 vote on March 22. But Mr. Levy said he wanted to see proof it was needed before approving it.

“Upon adoption of this resolution, I instructed the Department of Public Works to conduct a survey of the ridership on the routes impacted by this resolution,” Mr. Levy stated in a memo adopting the resolution into law.

“The riders overwhelmingly favor paying an increased fare to support the expansion to Sunday service.”

The fare increase, from $1.50 to $2, and the service increase to Sundays, will apply only to the S92 route, which runs from Orient to East Hampton, and the 10C, which runs from East Hampton to Montauk.

The bill sets the deadline for implementing Sunday service on these two lines as July 3, 2011

Fare hike deadline/implementation day is June 17.

the S92 and 10C better prepare for HUGE SUMMER CROWDS!!!!!! BIG TIME!!!!!

Crowded buses are better than no buses at all!

They really need to rewrite the 10C schedule, I barely understand it, the average non-railfan won't understand it at all.

The problem is that it's highly seasonal. I doubt it gets that much ridership in the middle of February. Transit schedules can 't keep changing, as people don't usually have the latest TT. And asterisks can confuse.

The 10C operates ONLY one bus. I know because I live in "The Hamptons". The ridership is good enough for ONE bus.

During the summer time, you will see the S94 heading out to the Montauk Lighthouse. That does get a few riders on it.

As for the S92, I do NOT see those buses getting packed on a Sunday. I hate to say it but those "Day Laborers" are not out on the weekends by me. MAYBE further up the Island but not during the weekends. Hell, ridership drops REAL GOOD on Saturday!

But they will certainly get used. Half hour rush hour service isn't really necessary, though. I always thought that SCT should split the route like this:

-Orient-Tanger

-Montauk-Tanger, eliminating the 10C

By shortening the route, they increase reliablity, and by providing direct Tanger service, the proposed S96/S98 will be unnecessary.

By the way, rather than have a fare hike for all passengers on routes receiving Sunday service, I think it would be a better idea to implement the fare hike only on Sundays.

So rather than paying $2 all times, riders can pay $1.50 on weekdays and Saturdays, and $2.50 or $2.75 on Sundays. That way, riders who use it on weekdays don't have to pay for a service they aren't using.

By the way, the S1 and (I believe) the S66 also have fairly high ridership. Perhaps they should also get Sunday service (with an accompanying fare hike)

Amtrak7: I like your proposal, since it encourages ridership on the 10C, by connecting it to Riverhead. Riders going between the North and South Fork have an easier transfer at Riverhead than at Montauk.

By the way, what were the S96 and S98 proposals?

Supplement routes to operate hourly Mon-Sat Tanger to Greenport/East Hampton. That would increase net frequency along the S92 without having buses run the full way.

S1 needs Sunday service, but a fare hike isn't really tolerable on a shorter route. S1, S92 are the top 2 ridership routes in the county. Other routes can be considered if these 2 succeed.

Or, if they keep the S92 as is, how about zoning it? $1.75 base fare. All passengers traveling through Riverhead pay an extra $1. Sunday-only fare hikes will discourage ridership and not provide enought revenue.

well not in the off season but in the summer ur forgetting the tourists and visitors that would make the S92 standing room only as they get from places to the LIRR especially in direct areas!!! during the summer the S92 wont need the day laborers

Well, with the exception of Riverhead, the S92 does not directly serve the LIRR stations.

Also, I've never seen the S92 with Standing Room Only on a Saturday during the summer. Also, many tourists tend to drive out to the Hamptons.

We shall see!

I see a few things wrong with that.

A) The S66 doesn't have that high of ridership during the day, only like one run a day (the first run) is jammed pack from start to finish. Most runs either get full/nearly full either at the mid point of the route or until the mid point of the route. some runs only carry a dozen or so passengers.

:P as Mr. Romaine states the Riverhead County Center is Closed on Sundays, so most likely the Court House in Patchouge would be closed as well. If that is the case then were would the route start and terminate from?

It will have sunday service on summers only as a connector linking patchouge with the north fork but service to mastic beach will have to be eliminated to speed up the line enough to allow the S66 to gain service plus it will be timed with LIRR trains on the montalk branch. Service supplementing S92 on sunday will be seasonal!!!!!
