If the former is the case, then it's regrettable (I would have preferred to see them go out with dignity) but there's no real harm done. If they're from the service pool, then either the already overworked maintenance crews have to take time from their repair backlog to run them through cleaners... or these cars would simply go on the dead list. Those are privately owned SPV2000's that used to operate up in MNRR territory. They are being stored in hudson yard till conrail or amtrak or M&E or someone else decides to move them for the group that owns them. If you noticed the gondola attached to them, that's how they got there, most railroads do not carry the compromise coupler which works as an adapter to the budd pin & socket automatic coupler.
