rlrl Posted June 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2011 subway cars that appear more "deluxe"--wider bodies, fake woodgrain plastic on the walls, walls with MTA "wallpaper", seats that face in different directions instead of one way, quieter riding these cars are on the A, D, F lines(I don't ride that many lines so i am not familiar with many) and have noticed them since 1978 when i first rode an F train they are a bit like the Atlanta's MARTA trains but they are dirtier than MARTA are these called R46 trains? how long before 1978 were they around? R1103 Posted June 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 7, 2011 The first of them were built in 1975. However, some were taken out of service due to an issue with their trucks (you can read about that in the wiki article). After their GOH (late 1980s), the problems with the trucks were solved though. R36 Preservation Posted June 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 7, 2011 The 75' design with the upgraded interior was introduced in 1971 on the R44s. The R46s followed in 1975 and delivery continued through 1976-77 into 1978. Modified R44s can be found in Staten Island.
Eric B Posted June 8, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 8, 2011 I always thought of them as "luxury" when they first came out. The closest thing we had to a "railroad" coach. I even remember the one that had the carpeting!
rlrl Posted June 8, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted June 8, 2011 the R46's they are exactly the same as they were back in 78 when i first rode them. like i said before they remind me of Atlanta's MARTA trains but our NY trains are more colorful inside (tho dirtier of course). MARTA trains are a dull beige/tan i like the 60's retro trains on the 2 and 3 lines they are quieter than the 1 and 6 trains but i still think the R46's are the best thanks for the info
