Shortline Bus Posted July 5, 2011 Author Share #26 Posted July 5, 2011 There are no short turns. Every northbound bus goes to New York, the Newark/Jersey City buses are basically 67X's extended to/from Atlantic City. Only diff is its called the 319. Ocean City/Wildwood/Cape May buses are mostly during the peak hrs, and provides extra service for the 510/552 to ease the crowds during those peak hours. Some of you saying 5 riders between Toms Rivers & Atlantic is a waste. Not with the 319. Those 5 riders wana get to AC fast. Its only 54mins, depending on the driver. Depending on the time of day that ride between AC & Toms river can be a sardine can. Actually it does. There are many people below Toms River on the 559 who depend on it to get to Toms River for a 137 Parkway Exp & 319. As for the normal rider New York means nothing to them. I seen someone mention the 319 stopping in Pleasantville; um no, it would completely kill the purpose of a fast way to AC for those wanting to get there. There is no demand for a 319 in Pleasantville; those of you who say likewise, become a driver. Why in the hell would you send a bus somewhere its not needed. Those people in Pleasantville can easily hop on a 502, 507, 508, 509, 554, 559 and the early AM 553s for ACBT. The 319 is a 300 series route for a reason. Just because it can go anywhere, doesn't mean "o send it to Pleasantville. So 553 since you a driver in that area does the 319 ever get crowded between Toms River and AC at least weekdays? The couple of times (all on weekends)i been on the 319 it was very small only 5-10 riders. From Toms River-NYC on other hand, the 319 is always crowded and even 'empty' trips most of the seats are always filled.
553 Bridgeton Posted July 5, 2011 Share #27 Posted July 5, 2011 Yes it does get crowded. You think riding the 319 a few times a year your gona see the riders pattern? You cant base a scrapping of a route from riding it a few times. If ridership was so low the 319 would have been handed off to Academy & Greyhound 100%. Academy and the 319 works the nearly the same way as Academy and the 139. Greyhound cant even handle its Atlantic City peeps now, what makes you think they can handle even more riders from NJT? Whenever im at the gate people are always complaining because buses goto the casino first then ACBT. The Ballys buses forget about trying to get a seat alone or with a friend. Greyhound may have some nice and roomy X3s but the service is horrible. There were times I beat greyhound to NY and I have a stop in Toms River. NJT makes alot of money off the 319 and more then what some of you peeps think.

DaTransitMan4608 Posted July 5, 2011 Share #29 Posted July 5, 2011 Anyone who thinks getting rid of the 319 is a good idea must be on drugs. There is a reason that the 319 is there, is to get ppl from Jersey City/Newark down to Atlantic City/Wildwood/Cape May. Greyhound and Academy don't do that, they go directly from New York to AC without even stopping.

Amtrak7 Posted July 6, 2011 Share #32 Posted July 6, 2011 Which SJ rtes are the most profitable??? Probably the high-fare routes. To make a bus with few stops profitable requires high fares or LOTS of riders. (551 comes to mind) I doubt South NJ local is that profitable, with the long routes and comparatively low ridership vs the Northern div.

I can guarantee you all that NJT knew what it was doing when the they made the 319 and the 137X to TR: NJT needed revenue and people aren't going to waste 2-3 hours on the 559 while they can catch a 319 and be in AC in 65 minutes or less. Without the 319 leaving NY or NWK, there would be some crowding on the 67 and the 137.

metsfan Posted July 6, 2011 Share #35 Posted July 6, 2011 I would give it to Academy if it were contracted out or spun off. It does well so keep as is. - A

In that particular post of mine, I was speakin on the perspective of Shortline's idea regarding killin off the 319... Out of AC, no NYC rider's thinkin about the 559.... In that particular post of mine, I was speakin on the perspective of Shortline's idea regarding killin off the 319... Out of AC, no NYC rider's thinkin about the 559.... I will admit I actually had to redo most of my NJT plan due to info received on this forum and others. As well as due to my own observations so I had to almost start over from scratch I also looked into NJT's history some routes actually would be useful today even though they weren't years ago but only after being changed a bit. Most of the 150 series modifications I backed off of thanks to help from others on on-time performance. That data helped in determining which routes can be reshaped and which ones can't. The final phase is to ride the ones I didn't ride already that are on my list. Most of my plans are for completing loose ends. I even learned about a new door to door service from sussex county to newark NO LIES it's just $15 to newark!!!!!!!!!!! way cheaper than any cab I have saw up there. If successful I may have to make more changes to the NW part. soon I will reveal bits of the completed ones. Later on MD and CT will be shown in preliminary stages. On onother thread.
