R62/a goh?

Recommended Posts

So is it to early to ask when the R62/A GOH is going to start? After all the newest cars are 24 years old already. I want to know what changes you guys would like to see when they are overhauled. Personally the only two things I'd Like to see are real bench seating (I hate the bucket seats) and better PA Systems so you can understand what the T/O is saying or maybe even automated announcements.

The R62's and the R68's are basically getting their midlife overhauls. Their side windows will be replaced with the LCD display signs you see on the R160, the seats will be blue like the seats you see in the R44's on Staten Island, the R142's, the R143's, and the R160's, they will get new floors, and they will get the automated announcements from the newer trains. That is about it.

All of that is great but Keep the roll signs LCD's are great but keep the older stock a bit classic.

All of the r62's currently going through sms are in addition being retrofitted with brand new e-cam propulsion systems. These systems are being shipped via air and are very expensive so expect these cars to stick around for a while. The easiest way to tell that a car has recently recieved ecam units is to look at a car when it is on the other side of a station while standing on a platform you will notice shiny and clean new resistor grids silver and copper in color with white ceramic insulators on top. The manufacturer of these units is adtranz. These units have been on the r62a's for awhile now and prove more reliable then the older general electric scm-1 units.

Is this really all true? Also, I assume you mean LED (not LCD) displays, since the R160s have LED displays (the R142/R142A have LCDs).

Also, will FINDs be installed on them?

It came out that the (MTA) wants to give the R62s and R68s digital signs and automatic announcements, but those plans are preliminary right now and nothing is written in stone.

If that is the case, they should at least strongly consider using multicolor LED signs for the headsigns.

No way. The (MTA) just needs to make them better because half the time you can't see the letter.

Well, the sign area is larger on the R62/R62A/R68/R68A, and a large multicolor sign would make routes easily identifiable. Looking at the proposal though, it looks like there are no plans to replace the front rollsigns, just the side signs, plus the addition of an interior sign.
