R142A on the (2)

Does anybody know why the (2) sometimes uses an R142A? I'm just curious. I understand the (2) using the R142s with the (5) strip maps, because it goes to Nereid Avenue in the Bronx, in peak direction. This is just weird. Aren't the strip maps on the (2)(4)(5) and (6) supposed to mean that those cars should stick to those lines?

Another weird oddity, the (6) used both R142 and R142A's on one train.

Seriously, I'd like to see more R142A's on the (2) and (5) with their own strip maps or Flexible Information Notice Displays.

If you catch an R142A on the (2) you're super lucky!

A couple of years ago i caught a Brooklyn bound (2) train that had signs for the (6). The train itself announced the stops right, but obviously the strip didn't match, but it did change every time we passed a station.

That's weird. I did catch an R142A on the (2) with the (4) map. I understand the (2) borrowing cars from the (4)(5) but I'd never thought on the (6). Some (6) trains have used the R142 when those cars were just being put into service on November 2000.

They tried running R142s in mixed sets with R142As, it didnt work out. They're compatible from a mechanical standpoint but in practice one set is faster than the other, and if that set isn't pulling the consist (ie is the rear five) it bumps the front cars = bucking broncos and the "look mommy no hands" geese go on the floor B):).

The reasons why the (2) sometimes use the R142A are....

1]Theres are car shortages due to many 142/As OOS with problems. And these shortages can mess up the car assignments

2]The dispatchers at livonia yard sometimes send 142As from the (4) onto the (2) for some unknown reason.

But if you see a 142A from the (6) on the (2). That is due to a car shortage and poor relialbty of the R142s and they need to get trains from somewere else to cover service.

There WERE car shortages. Not anymore. But when they are, you're right they'll mess up the car assignments.

You misread what i said i did not say that there is currently a car shortage. I said that when there are car shortages that caues 142As to pop up on the (2). You misread what i said as usual.

Same as the R160 Alstom and Siemens cars.

They ran a R160 Alstom and Siemens train in passenger serivce already from what a was told they worked out fine.

The R142's and R142A's are like apples and oranges wont work, somebody screwed up with that order (of coruse said person is somehwre in Fla living well).

8833 - 8837 and 8848 - 8852 Test train, caught and rode it XD. The R160 configuration was made for both propulsion sets to run as an equal, with no problems whatsoever.

As for the R142/142A. I remember seeing a R142 On the (6) @ Canal Street going uptown. I think the lead car was 6336. As for one of them being faster, the kawasaki sets were faster, right?

I can ask one of my A Div people about that last time i was there they tried it once and it didnt work out too well.

As for the R142A's being a bit faster yes they are brake better too but you got wet rails that train bucks like a bronco.

The same thing happened to me last year. Caught an R142A on the 2 train and I loved the experience.

  • 6 years later...

I think that the R142As were on the (2) train because these past weeks the (2) has been ending at 149 St- Grand Concourse and the (4) stops there. The R142As that were on the (2) trains showed (4) on the inside sign, so I suppose that that is why the (2) had R142As.

welcome to the forums, necropsying is something you shouldn't do. You should check when the last post was, if it was within the last few months it is ok. If you want to talk about it start a new thread.

This is just a general no no in forums, and welcome.

It would be nice if someone actually answered the question, but whatever. A lone set of R142As ran on the (2) for the past two weekends because the line was shut down between E 180 St and 149 St-Grand Concourse and the southern portion of the line was unable to access its home yard at 239th Street. There are no plans for the R142As to run on the (2) in normal service.
